藝環会（げいかん）

若手アートスペースの現在地と未来を考えるシンポジウム

　藝環会を開催いたします。

　「藝環会」は、アートスペースの運営や企画に携わる若手作家・実践者たちが全国から集い、現場での課題や展望を共有するトークイベントです。

会場は、東京都台東区池之端にあるアートスペースAVA。

　北海道から沖縄まで、6名の若手運営者によるトークセッションを予定しています。ゲストには、吉祥寺でArt Center Ongoingを長年運営されてきた小川希さんを迎え、次世代アートスペースの未来をともに考えます。

　地域に根ざした取り組みの実例や、スペース運営のリアルな課題が語られる場として、アーティスト同士のネットワーク構築と実践的な知見の共有が期待される貴重な機会です。

『藝環会』企画の背景

　アートスペースAVAは、2023年4月に東京・台東区で活動を始めました。

コロナ禍で人が集まる場が減るなか、「自分たちの手で集まれる場所をつくりたい」という思いから、学生が立ち上げたスペースです。これまで、展覧会や勉強会、自主ゼミ、書籍制作などを手探りで続けてきましたが、同世代でオルタナティブなスペースを運営している仲間に出会う機会は、ほとんどありませんでした。

そんな中、北海道でも同じように学生がスペースを運営していることを知り、「自分たちだけじゃなかった」と大きな励ましを受けました。しかし、全国に点在するこうした実践が、互いに出会い、学び合う機会はほとんどありません。

それなら自分たちで場をつくろう──そんな思いから、『藝環会』は始まりました。

スペース運営は「3年が限界」と言われることもあり、継続の難しさが常に課題です。今回のトークイベントでは、立ち上げ間もない運営者から、10年以上活動を続けてきた実践者までが集まり、それぞれの経験や課題、将来のモデルを共有・検討します。

また、美術館の外側から継続的にオルタナティブな美術の可能性を探る場としても企画しています。

登壇者には、コロナ後に誕生した新しいスペースの運営者、これから立ち上げを目指す人、そして長年活動を続けてきたベテランまで、多様な背景を持つ方々が参加します。地域ごとの立ち上げの経緯や課題への向き合い方、継続のための工夫など、多角的な議論が交わされる予定です。

『藝環会』は、点として存在していた若手スペース運営者をつなぎ、AVAを起点に“面”としてのネットワークを育てる第一歩です。コロナ禍が落ち着いた今だからこそ、持続可能なスペース運営のあり方を見直し、散発的に行われてきた実践を共有することで、地域に新たな文化の生態系が生まれることを願っています。

「藝環会があったから、今がある」──そう言ってもらえる未来につながる、実りある場を目指します。

Geikankai
A Symposium on the Present and Future of Emerging Artist-Run Spaces

We are pleased to announce the upcoming Geikankai symposium.

“Geikankai” is a talk event that brings together emerging artists and practitioners from across Japan who are involved in running or curating artist-run spaces, to share the challenges and possibilities they face on the ground.
The venue will be AVA, an artist-run space located in Ikenohata, Taito-ku, Tokyo.

From Hokkaido to Okinawa, six young organizers will join a series of talk sessions. We will also welcome guest speaker Nozomu Ogawa, who has long operated Art Center Ongoing in Kichijoji, to discuss the future of next-generation art spaces.
This will be a rare opportunity to hear concrete examples of community-based initiatives and the real challenges of running such spaces, while fostering networks among artists and exchanging practical knowledge. We warmly invite you to join us.

Background of the Geikankai Project

AVA, the hosting artist-run space, began its activities in April 2023 in Taito City, Tokyo. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, when gathering places had dwindled, it was founded by students determined to create a space where people could meet in person.
Since then, we have experimented with exhibitions, study groups, self-organized seminars, and publishing projects, but opportunities to meet peers running alternative spaces in our own generation have been rare.

We were greatly encouraged when we learned that students in Hokkaido were running a space under similar circumstances—realizing that “we were not alone.”
Yet, such practices scattered across the country rarely have the chance to meet and learn from each other. That is why we decided to create such a platform ourselves, which became the starting point for Geikankai.

It is often said that “an artist-run space lasts only three years,” and sustainability is a constant challenge. In this talk event, we will bring together organizers ranging from those who have just begun to those who have been active for over a decade, to share experiences, challenges, and possible future models.
We also envision this as a space to explore the ongoing possibilities of alternative art practices from outside the framework of art museums.

Speakers will include those running new spaces born in the post-pandemic era, those preparing to launch, and long-standing veterans—each with a unique background. Discussions will address how spaces were founded in different regions, how organizers tackle challenges, and strategies for sustainability.

Geikankai aims to connect emerging space organizers—previously existing as isolated “points”—and, with AVA as a hub, to cultivate a network as a “plane.”
Now, as the pandemic subsides, it is time to reconsider sustainable models for running spaces and to share practices that have been carried out sporadically, in the hope of fostering new cultural ecosystems in local communities.

Our goal is to make Geikankai a place that people will look back on and say:
“We are here today because Geikankai existed.”
