I write in enthusiastic support of Glenn Geher's election to the Ulster County Legislature.

I have known Glenn Geher for 17 years. I twas my good fortune to be able to hire him to work in the SUNY New Paltz psychology department when I served as dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Glenn proved to be a fine teacher and mentor, and has developed a national reputation as an authority in the field of evolutionary psychology. But most important for his potential as an elected legislator, he has consistently sought opportunities to provide leadership within our college, and has had great success with his peers in leadership roles.

Glenn became the chair of the psychology department and proved highly effective in managing this complex, diverse, high-demand unit of the college. Recently, he was among the faculty who agreed to serve to create a reasoned campus-wide discourse on academic freedom and free speech in a volatile local and national environment.

I recently served with Glenn on a search committee to fill a key campus position. He proved to be a person who came to meetings prepared, demonstrated sound judgment, and had a rare capacity to help colleagues with different views come to a consensual outcome.

Glenn Geher and I are of different political parties; we don't agree on a number of issues. But I served in the Ulster County Legislature for twelve years and know that partisan difference is less important in the work of county government than is integrity, sound judgment, a capacity for evidence-based decision making, a willingness to do what is right when the chips are down, and the ability to be effective with peers of diverse values and backgrounds. In this way, leadership in legislative service is a lot like leadership on a college campus. Glenn has amply demonstrated this type of leadership.

When Glenn Geher is elected to the Ulster County Legislature, we will be well-served.

Gerald Benjamin - New Paltz

November 7th is fast approaching and there is a lot at stake here in our little neck of the woods. There is one local election that could mean a lot for the WTA and our members.

In Plattekill, a local college professor is running for Ulster County legislature. Glenn Geher is running for UC leg district 12. District 12 is an oddly cut district (like most of them) that covers a bit of New Paltz, Gardiner and most of Plattekill.

Glenn lives in New Paltz and his kids go to New Paltz High School. Glenn is a professor and chair of the Psychology department at SUNY New Paltz. He is a member of UUP and therefore a fellow NYSUT member.

You may have seen him running around Plattekill as he is an avid runner and marathoner. He may know him from being one of the founders of Plattekill Day or as the Vice President of the Friends of the Plattekill Library. Glenn is also one of the founding members of Move Forward NY CD 19, a grassroots organization that started when we lost CD 19 to John Faso (our current US representative). The point is – you know him - he is one of us. He has been a force for change long before he decided to run for Ulster County legislature.

So why consider a vote for Glenn Geher? Here’s a couple of important reasons to WTA members:

- He knows the importance of teachers to our future. He is one of us and he writes about it.

o https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/darwins-subterranean-world/201704/the-future-nation-depends-teachers

- He is fiscally cautious. He runs the Psychology department overseeing 35 employees with a 7 figure budget. He has managed to keep all of his full time employees during a time when SUNY would rather hire adjuncts than keep full time professors.

o He will use his past experience and negotiating skills to work with the other legislators to do what is right for Plattekill.

- He has held many leadership positions.

o Department Chair of Psychology at SUNY New Paltz

o Chair, President's Task Force on Free Speech at SUNY New Paltz

o Acting Department Chair of Black Studies* at SUNY New Paltz

o Founding Director of Evolutionary Studies at SUNY New Paltz

o Chair, Academic Affairs Committee at SUNY New Paltz

o Senator, Academic Senate (Campus-wide) at SUNY New Paltz

o Senator, Liberal Arts and Sciences Senate at SUNY New Paltz

o Founding President of the NorthEastern Evolutionary Psychology Society

o Editor, EvoS Journal

o Associate Editor, Human Ethology Bulletin

o Vice President of the Faculty, Western Oregon University

o Vice President of the Friends of the Plattekill Public Library

He knows how to run committees and meetings efficiently to get the work done in the Ulster County legislature.

- His vision for Plattekill in his own words

The Town of Plattekill was designated as an economically distressed municipality in a 2015 federal report. Our town has no main street lined with businesses and many of our residents live in economically difficult conditions. This is not acceptable and we can do better. Ulster County tourism brings in hundreds of millions of dollars a year – yet when people think of the Hudson Valley, Plattekill doesn’t typically make the radar. We cannot stand for this. Plattekill is an extraordinary town with great land and an exceptional array of hard-working families looking to make advancements. Years ago, Plattekill was known throughout the tri-state region as the home of the Spanish Alps – a tourist destination for thousands. Through vision, hard work, and collaboration, we will take steps to bring Plattekill into its next Golden Age.

At the county level, we need to ensure that Plattekill is well-represented at the meetings of the Legislature. My attendance record at SUNY New Paltz is well over 99%, and if given the opportunity to serve in this position, you can bet that I will bring that same dedicated work style to our county office in Kingston. The legislature is currently republican-dominated, while the County of Ulster is disproportionately Democratic. This is a problem. And it is a problem that we are going to fix.

Glenn has asked his opponent for a public forum to discuss their varied views on the future of Plattekill. As of this writing, there has been no reply. Don’t the residents of UC District 12 deserve the opportunity to hear both of the candidates speak on what is important to them? Here is what Glenn would like to discuss:

* How to best revitalize Plattekill's distressed economy.

* The primary needs of the people of Plattekill and how to best address these needs.

* The most effective approaches to lobby for County, State, or Federal monies to initiate programs that would benefit the people of our district.

* The recent Green Party controversy

Glenn needs our help as the teachers in his district. We can talk to our neighbors if we live in the district about Glenn. We can as the WTA volunteer to canvass for him and make calls to Plattekill residents for him. Please think about donating an hour or two to help get one of our own elected locally. It is time for us to have a real advocate for our issues in the Ulster County legislature. Glenn is someone who carries our educational issues forward in everything he does. It is time to see some real positive change in Plattekill.

If you would like to meet Glenn or hear him play (yup he plays in a band also), come out to Café 32, next Friday night, October 20th to hear his band “Questionable Authorities” play. This is a fundraiser for Glenn’s campaign. You will have an opportunity to sit and chat with Glenn and just have a good time.

Please send me an email if you would like to get involved in Glenn Geher’s run for Ulster County legislator for District 12.

I am writing on behalf of my mentor and friend of over a decade, Dr. Glenn Geher, in order to support his candidacy for Ulster County Legislator of the 12th district. Since I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Glenn, his accomplishments have grown proportionally, including becoming the chair of SUNY New Paltz’s psychology department, receiving multiple grants (including a 2008 National Science Foundation grant to help broaden the reach of science education at a local level), being an active member of the Plattekill community (especially at our local library where Glenn serves as Vice President of the Friends of the Plattekill Library), and establishing a rich history of political activism in local politics.

On a personal level, Glenn’s ability to be an renowned professor, a family man and such an integral part of our local community has always blown me away. As a mentor Glenn taught me how to manage my time, conduct myself in a professional manner, and gave me the courage to go out into the workforce after graduation and make a difference in people’s lives within our community. No matter how busy he may seem, when in need, Glenn always makes time to actually sit down and listen to you. Because of his guidance and mentorship I was able to run a Rest Home in Modena, NY, with a population of elderly individuals in need of extra care.

Glenn’s written multiple books, published over one hundred articles, and has been invited to give talks all over the world. Glenn’s interdisciplinary approach to teaching and doing research effortlessly spills over into the realm of local politics and I am highly confident he will serve our community in the same way that he has served the academic community. Plattekill desperately needs a change and Glenn is the right person to oversee this transition. Quite frankly, Glenn Geher is an exemplar of excellence in every sense. A vote for him is a vote for progress within our community.

Thank you for your time and consideration,

Rachael Carmen - Modena (District 12)

I am writing this letter in order to endorse Glenn Geher for Ulster County Legislator, District 12, Plattekill. I have known Glenn and his family for four years. During that time I have come to admire Glenn for many reasons: not only is he a devoted husband and father, but an award-winning scholar, a mentor to generations of college students, an active volunteer in our community, a great neighbor and friend. Unlike Roberts, whose ads promoting his business demean and sexualize women, Glenn treats everyone with respect and, as a professor at SUNY New Paltz, has worked tirelessly to shape generations of women leaders and scholars. Unlike his opponent, who seems to have used dubious means to obtain votes, Glenn is honest and transparent; his only purpose in entering this race is to serve our community, not to help himself. Glenn’s formidable intellect, his energy and passion for the beautiful place where we live will make him an effective legislator, a public servant who will only be looking for the betterment of our community. I urge you to learn more about Glenn and to vote for him next November 7th.

Miryam Antunez De Mayolo - Plattekill, District 12

There’s a man in District 12 named Glenn Geher

Who by all accounts is exceedingly fair

If you meet him you’ll learn

That he respects neighbors’ concerns

Because it’s the town of Plattekill of which he most cares

Glenn Geher is as genuine as they get

There is no arrogance or nastiness in his mindset

He is sincere in his quest

To make District 12 the best

Which is why on Nov. 7 he’s your bet

I’ve known Glenn for nearly twenty years

And I know I speak for my peers

When I say with all conviction

And without a trace of fiction

That Glenn will listen to each of you with open ears

Glenn’s opponent has engaged in some questionable acts

That suggests his view of democracy is out of whack

You’ll never get this behavior with Glenn

He just doesn’t act like other unethical men

Because he deeply respects the democratic contract

So on November 7 when you go to vote

Please remember this important note

If you want to support someone who’s honest and true

Someone whose mission is to fully represent you

Then Glenn Geher is most definitely your bloke

Peter Kaufman - New Paltz

I have worked closely with Glenn Geher, candidate for Ulster County Legislator – District 12 – for well over a decade. We have co-written a book and several articles together over these years. Based on this experience, I can confidently say that Glenn has demonstrated extraordinary leadership skills – overseeing many major projects, including large budgets and large numbers of staff, at a time. He also has an extraordinary character, going out of his way to nurture and support his students and colleagues. He has rightfully earned a reputation as someone who is incredibly productive and who works tirelessly for the greater good. There is no doubt in my mind that Glenn’s presence in the legislature will lead to many benefits for the people of the Town of Plattekill – and beyond.

Glenn Geher for UC-12

Donald Trump is not on the ballot this year….Or Is He???

The Legislator Kevin Roberts introduced an Anti-Mosque Amendment to the Ulster County Legislature. Yes, an Islamophobic, religiously intolerant, Trump-like Anti-Mosque Amendment…Right here in River City! It boggles the mind!

BUT…there is something we can do!

The Founding Director of Evolutionary Studies, and member of the SUNY New Paltz Psychology Dept, Glenn Geher is running to replace the Trumpian Roberts in the 12th District of the Ulster County Legislature.

When Bernie Sanders said people should get involved….Glenn did with Move Forward NY-19. When Bernie encouraged talented people to run for office Glenn Geher is exactly the type of candidate that he would have had in mind: Smart, caring, educated, passionate, and committed to making this a better place than we found it.

So yes, I encourage ALL of you in Ulster County’s 12 Legislative District to vote for Glenn Geher to be your new representative, and part of a fresh new wave of actual representation. And don’t just take my word for it…Crossing Party lines, the honorable Dr. Gerald Benjamin agrees, and has endorsed Glenn.

So please help improve our Legislature, and Vote for Glenn Geher on November 7!

Tim Hunter - Gardiner

I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Glenn Geher, candidate for Ulster County Legislator, District 12 (Plattekill), as community member and neighbor for over 11 years. During this time, Glenn has unceasingly proven himself to be an earnest, dynamic, benevolent, forward-thinking and community-minded individual.

In addition serving as Chair of the SUNY New Paltz Psychology Department, Glenn serves the people of Plattekill as Vice President of the Friends of the Plattekill Library and has taken on a key role as an organizer of Plattekill’s annual community celebration, Plattekill Day.

Glenn has an established history of political activism. He has taken on a leadership role in Move Forward New York, a citizen action group committed to promoting social justice, preserving civil rights, and ensuring environmental conservation. Through my participation in Glenn’s Run with Glenn! campaign initiative, I have witnessed firsthand Glenn’s genuine desire to hear about the issues that are important to the people of Plattekill as well as his ability to engage in meaningful dialogue with the constituents of District 12.

Glenn’s enthusiasm, passion and goodwill are contagious. Please join me on Tuesday, November 7 in bringing Glenn’s background, experience, forward-thinking, passion and ethics to the County Legislature to advocate for the greater good of our community.

Plattekill: Time for the Double G – Good Government and Glenn Geher

Are you aware that the in 2015 Plattekill was designated by the Federal government as being an economically distressed municipality? But why is this? Ulster County is raking in millions in tourism dollars and something also else makes this equally unacceptable: Plattekill lies on the intersection of major thoroughfares, Route 44/55 and Route 32, so it has LOCATION. Nevertheless, we have little to show for it.

Contrast this with the Town of Newburgh and where Route 32 crosses Rt. 17. You’ll find dozens of large department stores, eateries and hotels. Of course, it is easy to dismiss this and simply say, “sure but the Town of Newburgh has 4 times the population.” As a counterpoint, I will submit that such was not always the case. When I moved to the Town of Newburgh in 1981, none of this existed. How did it come about? Simply put, Good Government. Similar developments have also happened to Highland.

So, why not Plattekill? Well, consider this: Kevin Roberts, your current Ulster County legislator has a roofing business that just happens to be in Newburgh, even though a home improvement t a warehouse facility is empty, right here in Plattekill. Or perhaps it lies in the lack of transparency in the Robert’s campaign. Even today, that campaign has yet to file the required NYS Board of Elections disclosure reports for himself or any committee raising money despite what the law requires. Or maybe the answer simply lies in the way the campaign seeks to win. In the recent Green Party primary, the Roberts’ campaign visited non-registered voters and asked them to register as Green. Then they had these people fill out absentee ballot applications that were all delivered to the BOE personally. The applications stated the voters would not be present at their addresses until December 31, although multiple witnesses interacted with them on primary night in Plattekill. Or maybe, the answer to Plattekill’s lack of real economic growth simply lies in Kevin Roberts showing up to just over 60% of the legislative sessions.

Plattekill are you tired of this? Then, elect someone who does care – the double G man, Glenn Geher. Now in the interest of full disclosure, I am a resident of Gardiner, yet I deeply care about Plattekill and Ulster County. I have worked on the Friends of the Plattekill Public Library for three years and watched Glenn, as Vice President, push to fund for library improvements and needed funding. I have visited Glenn at SUNY New Paltz and seen how he has pushed for grants that have radically improved the facilities and economically benefitted New Paltz. I have been his campaign treasurer from the outset and can attest that every requirement of the NYS BOE financial disclosure laws have been complied with. Glenn insists that the voters of Plattekill have the information on how his campaign is financed.

So, there’s your choice this November 7th for Ulster County Legislator from District 12. You can opt to keep a businessman, who doesn’t want his business in Plattekill … a legislator who doesn’t vigorously pursue county dollars … a legislator who plays games with election law and conceals his political donors and expenditures. Or, you can elect a proven leader who has spent eight years as the head of his department at SUNY New Paltz. You can elect a person, who attends every meeting at SUNY and the Friends of the Library. You can state clearly that you want a leader who does not rig elections and who opens the books to the public. A leader who believes in the power of Good Government: Glenn Geher.

Stephen Weir - Gardiner

I have known Glenn Geher for well over a decade as a professional colleague and a friend. I have watched him build a professional society of diverse people who work together to improve people’s lives. He started with a group of disparate academics and created a community. He has not only taken a leadership role in bringing people together, but has consistently asked the questions “How can we improve this?” and “What else can we do to improve science/education/people’s lives?” He keeps his eye on this goal regardless of the project he is working on (and might I add, each project comes in on time and under budget). I would be thrilled to have him as a leader in my community. Plattekill would surely benefit from his leadership.

To the Editor:

I write in strong support of Glenn Geher for Ulster County Legislature (12th district -- Plattekill). I have known Glenn for years and strongly believe that he will make a great legislator. He long headed the Department of Psychology at SUNY New Paltz, where he is still a faculty member, and I am an emeritus member of that department. I have been amazed at how much he has accomplished over the years I've known him -- teaching, writing (books, articles, blog posts for Psychology Today), mentoring students in research, starting the Northeast Evolutionary Psychology Society, chairing the Psych Department for about nine years, sponsoring programs at the college, playing in an all-faculty band, and yet being a devoted husband and father. His energy is amazing.

And he is open to different points of view -- something we don't find often enough in academics or politicians. Finally, as an emeritus, I have always found Glenn eager to talk with me, appreciating my ideas, and simply treating me with genuine respect -- something we older, retired faculty members don't always find among the younger crowd. I know my peers have found him to be the same with them.

I have no doubt that Glenn Geher will be a hard-working, dedicated, and effective County legislator, who will benefit not only his own community but the entire county. His public service will be a gift to all of us, and I am very happy to endorse him.

Mark Sherman - New Paltz

I became acquainted with Glenn Geher more than 10 years ago as he was leading a group founding a regional psychology society to foster student development and provide experiences for students and faculty to work together. Over the years, I have worked with Glenn in several capacities; as chair of a decades old psychology department, co-founder of a national consortium of an interdisciplinary minor, and research collaborator. More importantly, I came to know Glenn as someone who cares deeply about his students, his family, his friends, and doing what is right. Glenn is committed to the town of Plattekill. He built his adult and family life here. He has volunteered in the schools and town library. I am confident Glenn will show the same commitment serving the people of Plattekill as Ulster County Legislator - District 12.

Plattekill Needs Glenn Geher for County Legislator 12th District, Juan Figueroa for Town Supervisor, Cindy Delgado and Gladys Figueroa for Town Council

Enough division. Now is the time for togetherness and progress. Glenn Geher, Juan Figueroa, Cindy Delgado, and Gladys Figueroa are a team of forward thinking individuals who will not participate in party politics. Instead, this pioneering group of candidates will actively seek to unify and serve all the people of Plattekill. They will speak to the needs of our community as a whole, and engage with local residents in every effort to make life better for all people of Plattekill.

Jobs, services for a path to recovery from those in our community who are suffering from drug addiction, new businesses, affordable housing for families and single parent households; these are only a few of the areas where Plattekill is falling behind our neighboring communities.

Plattekill is a beautiful place to live. We have great schools within our district with brilliant and caring educators. When our young people graduate, they are very well prepared to take on the world, unfortunately, they quickly realize they will have to leave the community they love to secure a prosperous future. Let’s make our votes this fall votes for the future of our youth. Let’s give them hope for a future that rises above the current stagnation that Plattekill is experiencing, by voting for Glenn Geher for Ulster County Legislator 12th District, Juan Figueroa for Plattekill Town Supervisor, Cindy Delgado Plattekill Town Council and Gladys Figueroa for Plattekill Town Council on Tuesday, November 7.

I strongly support Glenn Geher as a candidate for Ulster County Legislator – District 12. Glenn is the antidote to many of the problems that plague our current political system. I have known Glenn for over a decade as an academic colleague, professional board member, and personal friend. Based on these extensive experiences, I know that Glenn will advance evidence based policies that promote the well-being of his constituents. I am continually impressed with his ability to identify worthy courses of action and his leadership to ensure that these goals are accomplished. Glenn has the ability to navigate the complex dynamics of policy makers who often have divergent agendas.

Glenn is not only highly competent, he also genuinely cares about people and will inconvenience himself to help someone else in need. I really wish there were more people like Glenn in the positions of power that shape the world we all live in. District 12 would greatly benefit from electing Glenn Geher to the Ulster County Legislature.

This time of political turmoil and impasse calls for thoughtful, intelligent, and honest leadership. These are exactly the qualities that come to mind when I think of my colleague, Glenn Geher. And I believe these are the very same qualities make him the right candidate for Ulster County Legislator – District 12.

I have worked closely with Glenn Geher on several large events and academic programs over the past nine years. During that time, he demonstrated a contagious enthusiasm and relentless hard work. And, he knows how to get things done. He knows how to responsibly manage budgets, and to skillfully manage people. Whenever possible, I want him on my committee or team.

Glenn Geher also keeps his word. In the workplace, and in the broader community, he has rightfully earned a reputation doing the right thing, and for standing up for others. Personally, I regularly turn to him for his frank and thoughtful guidance. As a member of the Ulster County Legislature, I know that Glenn Geher will contribute to the greater good of the Town of Plattekill, and to the greater mid-Hudson Valley region.

Ulster County needs Glenn Geher!

I can't vote for Glenn Geher for Ulster County legislator because I live in New Paltz, but if you live in District 12 in Plattekill, I hope you will. I've known Glenn for 15 years — as friend and colleague at SUNY New Paltz. Glenn’s supranormal enthusiasm, affability, and organizational skills have no doubt led to his remarkable leadership roles in academia — and now (thankfully) to community work. (See GeherForLegislator.org for details!) Geher is fair, balanced, truly cares about social and environmental justice, is evidence-based — and even understands human psychology! Now add the fact that Glenn knows how to get things done — and lots of things, all at the same time, and you can see why I feel confident in urging you to vote for him. Though Glenn is running on the Dem/WFP line, I have to say: if you’re a Republican, Independent, or Conservative, you should keenly consider him. Have a look at his page and meet with him. He’s a great listener. I think you’ll see that Glenn’s passion, intelligence, and ability to see all sides of an issue make him an ideal candidate for this role as your representative.

Alice Andrews — New Paltz

As both a former student of Dr. Glenn Geher and as a resident of Plattekill, I would like to explain the important qualities that he has as a candidate for County Legislator, District 12. Not only did Glenn implement a person-centered approach while teaching his students, he also consistently offered extracurricular activities and discussions that would help involve and connect SUNY New Paltz and its surrounding communities. Despite having a full schedule as a professor and as the Chair of the university’s Psychology Department, Glenn also volunteered to be my academic advisor. His insight within the field provided me with an invaluable experience during my undergraduate career along with preparing me for the future.

As County Legislator, I am confident that Glenn will incorporate the same care and dedication to his community as he does as a professor and chair. A long-standing member of the Plattekill community, Glenn has demonstrated his dedication through his position as Vice President of the Friends of the Plattekill Public Library along with playing a fundamental role in organizing Plattekill Day on an annual basis. Additionally, Glenn has an established history of political activism. As a founding member of Move Forward New York, he has dedicated himself to the preservation of civil rights along with ensuring environmental stability.

I am proud to have worked with Dr. Glenn Geher and look forward in supporting him in his campaign for County Legislator, District 12. Thank you very much for your time.
