Introduction to Becoming a Grand Challenges Scholar
My name is HJ Jones II, and I am completing an Accelerated Master’s Program (4+1) B.S./M.S. in Chemical Engineering with a Certification for Mathematical Concepts in Engineering at Arizona State University. My Grand Challenges theme is Sustainability, a focus that has shaped every part of my academic journey. This portfolio brings together the work I completed across the five GCSP competencies: Research (Talent), Multidisciplinary Learning (Interdisciplinary), Entrepreneurship (Viable Business), Multicultural/Global Experience, and Social Consciousness (Service-Learning), and demonstrates how each experience helped me grow as an engineer and as a person.
Inside this portfolio, I highlight the projects, courses, research, and service work that have prepared me to address real-world sustainability challenges. From my solid-state battery research and interdisciplinary cultural studies to my venture development in FSE 301, my global learning in Taiwan, and my service through E2 and EPICS, each experience contributed to my development as a future engineer committed to creating sustainable, human-centered solutions.
This portfolio reflects on my overall GCSP experience, how these components connect to one another, and how they have shaped my goals, values, and preparation for my future career.
