To be competent in service learning, I have been involved in multiple volunteering activities on campus and with in communities that I lived in. To create a meaningful service learning, I created following goals:

  • Attend at least 2 weekend service projects

  • learn to establish mutual relationship with community members

  • Explore Pacific North West

  • Organize at least 1 community service project

COORDINATOR OF AMERICAN FALLS CLEAN-UP DAY

  • Delegated task for teaching staff and coordinated action plan

  • Assisted Department of Transportation for garbage pick up

  • Communicated with students

  • Mobilized students to complete assigned task

  • Communicated with Department of Transportation for scheduling and collecting supplies.

ALTERNATIVE SERVICE BREAK

In spring of 2019, I attended alternative service break organized by CENTER FOR VOLUNTEERISM & SOCIAL ACTION at University of Idaho. During this experience our team helped Wallowa Mountains Hells Canyon Trails Association reconditioned hiking trail. We learned about protection of environment and ways to be involved to reduce waste.

Reflections:

On our first day right after we reached our camping spot we started unpacking. After unpacking I tried to find drinking water. I was directed towards water. I was very conscious that the water could be dirty because I could not see any filters. I poured some water in my bottle and looked inside thinking I will see dirt. But I looked inside I see that my water bottle was dirty inside and the water was clean.

I learned that I must be conscious about what I have or my faults before assuming that my problems are and could be caused by other.

PANHANDLE ANIMAL SHELTER

I participated in first Alternative Service Break which started on 5th to 7th of October. We helped Panhandle Animal Shelter and the thrift store ran by them. During the 3 day program we help them by sorting things for thrift store. We also got chance to learn how a non-profit organization work and got chance to spend time with animals.

I made 8 new friends during this involvement which was one of my goal for that weekend break. We took time to know each other and also played Ping-pong.

Bertram is such a good boy.

Go Vandals!

Let's play pingpong

we got chance to play with Chief, one of the dogs from shelter.

NEPALI STUDNET ASSOTIATION

For the last 5 years, I have served as an active volunteer for Nepali Student Association (NSA). As a volunteer, I have coordinated food preparation for Taste of Nepal, an annual event organized by NSA. I have also participated as a dancer since 2017.

REFLECTION:

Being involved in service projects, I learned an important skill. I learned to find purpose on things I do. I learned about the community and interacted with community members while participating in various service program. Such experiences helped me adapt to new culture and instilled an ability to be flexible in different environment. Being a part of Nepalese Student Association, I found a new family. Even though I was far from home, I found my culture and experienced it to the fullest.
