Secondary School Setting (Pinetree Secondary in Coquitlam)
Two Science 9 classes in the electricity unit.
Classes played 3 games: Fishing Frenzy, Crypto Hack, and Gold Quest.
Blooket was used as a review tool.
The games were used to review static electricity before a quiz on the topic.
The games were all played live in the classroom, and each were played for 7 minutes as recommend by Blooket.
Students were asked anonymously for general feedback following the static electricity quiz as well as:
What was your favourite game?
Did the games help your learning?
Based on the poll, students preferred Gold Quest as their favourite game, a game that utilizes chance for stealing gold from other players and random rewards as part of the gameplay. The vast majority reported that the games helped their learning.
Some student responses:
"Blooket was super fun, it brings the class together."
"I like Blooket because we can practice our knowledge and it will be good if we could play Blooket before all our unit tests."
"My favourite game was Fishing Frenzy because there was no stealing or swapping."
"It's a fun way of learning and testing your knowledge."
"It was fun and it helped me remember stuff for the quiz while being fun."
"Gold Quest was my favourite. I like stealing gold and that it lets you swap."
Before the games:
There are lots of pre-made question sets available to play without having to make my own. I like that my free account still has many game modes to choose from.
During the games:
These groups of students are normally difficult to keep on task, but every student was focused and engaged, overall, there was an excited energy from the entire class.
After the games:
I like the reporting feature. I can see how the class did as a whole, and I can see how every student did individually. I wish I could look at correctness per question, like I can with Kahoot!
Blooket creates a report after each game. These are great for gauging gaps in student understanding
