Why Internships

The Biomedical Allied Health Internship is a 135-hour, real-world learning experience completed between junior and senior year, designed to immerse students in biomedical and allied health environments. It connects classroom learning to professional practice by allowing students to engage directly with healthcare professionals, explore career paths, and develop workplace skills. This hands-on experience is a vital step in preparing for future studies and careers in the medical and health sciences fields. All BMAH/STEM magnet students are required to complete a 135-hour internship between the summer of their junior and senior years.

The BMAH internship format is designed to allow students to:

• Participate in the daily work of professionals in their workplace

• Engage in collaborative project work alongside mentors and their colleagues

• Experience the full spectrum of expectations, job skills, and opportunities related to success in the workplace,

• Evaluate and reflect on the work of a professional through active, daily on-the-job personnel workplace exchanges.

Internships

All rising seniors must complete 135-hr internship before the start of their senior year. Students must have an approved resume before their Admintern Portal account can be approved.

Timeline:

November/December of Junior Year- Internship meeting & begin resumes.
January of Junior Year- National & Regional opportunities open in Admintern.
January - April- Locate an internship and submit "Outside Opportunity" form if necessary.
4th MP of Junior Year to End of Summer- Complete hours, documentation, and final project before August 15th.

How do you get an internship?

Reach out to your network:
Contact family and friends who work in the medical field to see if their workplace would consider hosting a summer intern. Please note: Parents or close family members cannot serve as your internship mentor/supervisor.
Ask your healthcare providers:
Talk to your pediatrician, family doctor, dentist, physical therapist, chiropractor, or other local healthcare professionals.
Search online:
Explore internship opportunities at the local, state, regional, and national levels.
Use the Admintern Internship Portal:
Browse available opportunities and apply directly through the portal.
Apply early:
Submit applications for internships as early as possible.

Helpful Hints for a Successful Internship

Ask questions and be open to learning new things.
Treat your internship as a daily interview. Be your best daily!
Be on time every day. If you need to be out, give your supervisor as much notice as possible.
Dress appropriately. Ask your supervisor the dress code policy and follow it.
Keep cell phones off and away when you are working.
COMMUNICATE! Be professional and kind in all communication. Copy Mrs. Levine (aelevine@aacps.org) on any important emails to your supervisor. If something is not working, don't delay in asking for help.
