For this project I had to research the impacts of social media on myself and society.
After taking the "Am I ADDICTED to social media" quiz I am not surprised by my results. My results said "You're fairly reliant on social media, but there are far worse culprits! Still, it's good to be reminded that UK adults spend an average of 8 hrs 41 mins on screens every day, and 4 hours of that on smartphone apps alone (mainly social media). That's about a third of each day checking apps. Do you need to rethink your social media habits and the amount of time you spend scrolling?" and I believe that I am fairly reliant on social media. I do want to cut down my usage a little bit because I want to say that I spend about 3 hours a day on social media and I think I can cut it down more by lowering the amount I use TikTok.
The statistic I found most interesting in the article was that most U.S adults use YouTube the most out of every other app. I would've assumed that it was Facebook because I feel that app is the most used around the adults that I know in my life.
I think that social has both positive and negative impacts on society. On one hand social media gives people a platform to speak freely about any thoughts that people may have and I think that social media is a great outlet to speak your mind. It also gives a career opportunity by being able to be an influencer people get the ability to make money by being a social media influencer. But on the other hand social media has negative impacts such as higher standards for people. Since everyone is able to post the beauty standard gets pushed to kids who are very impressionable which will cause them to do whatever it takes to be apart of the standard which ruins their self-esteem.
While completing this project I learned that social media can impact us more than we think. I also learned that the amount of time we spend on social media is a very unhealthy amount. We have to do something as a society to lower our time on social media and spend more time with each other.
