W.E.B Dubois had a complex view of public protest as a means of advancing civil rights and addressing racial inequality. Du Bois believed in the power of public protest and activism as a means of bringing attention to the injustices faced by African Americans. He saw it as a way to mobilize people, raise awareness, and demand change.
Public protest is closely related to the African American community's efforts to claim equity and inclusion in American education. Public protest relates to this in many different ways. Some of those being Raising awareness, mobilizing to community, building solidarity, and drawing attention to specific cases. The biggest one in my opinion is public protest raising awarness. Public protests, such as marches, rallies, and demonstrations, bring attention to the issues of inequity and exclusion in American education. This could help draw attention to the problem and help create a solution. One example of this in my community near me was the BLM protest following the George Floyd incident. Where the community rallied together and marched the streets to draw attention to the problem that it btang.
Public protests play a critical role in the broader education goal of preparing students to be active citizens in a plural democratic society. Some of those keyways being: Civic participation, Understanding diverse perspectives, and awareness and engagement. I find this super important for making sure your students are engaged in the community and are aware of what going on in the world today.
