St. Andrew's is a Pilgrim's Way church. Many guide books seem to miss the church out, but steps are being taken now to change that and get the church back on the Pilgrim's Way map. See the classic book by Julia Cartwright here, mentioning Gatton as being a stop along the Pilgrim's Way. Before the parkland and estate were enclosed by Sir George Colebrooke, who employed Lancelot 'Capability' Brown to do so, around 1762-68, there were houses clustered around the church, as seen in the map extract below. When the estate was enclosed, the 'village' was moved to be outside the parkland entrance gate, where the hamlet of Gatton is today. The map dates from 1732.
