0. WATCH THIS. He does an excellent job of explain what anki is, the philosophy behind it, and how to change the daily intervals (which I do not do in this guide). Seriously, it's only 13 minutes long, which is really only 6.5 minutes on 2x speed. It's worth it.
Using the Tag and Cram features
Download Anki here and create an account.
This is what the front page of Anki will look like
Click on Creat Deck and name the deck (#1). Next, click add (#2).
Change the deck to the deck you want to add a card to and the card type. See below on tips for how to make Anki cards.
There are many ways to make Anki Cards. Here we will focus on four: Basic, Cloze, 10 Questions, and Occlusion
What is traditionally thought of when discussing flash cards. Can do front or front AND back (makes 2 cards). Typically asks a question on the front with the answer on the back or associations (ie, disease on front with presentation on back; perfect for front and back cards). This example uses the basic and reversed card format
Change the card type and type in your information. Click Add when done.
Clicking add creates these two cards.
NOTE- In order to see the front AND the back cards on the same day, you will need to click on the cog wheel drop down menu next to the deck you want to change, click Options, and uncheck the "Bury related cards until the next day." I recommend unchecking this box.
Reveals a portion of the card (whether it be a word or picture) as the "back side" of a card. Can have MULTIPLE clozes on a single card to make multiple notes. Additionally, pictures and texts can be added to the "extra" window to be seen on the back of each card. Preferred method of Brosencephalon, Zanki, and myself.
1. Change card type to cloze and add information. Use {{c1::Hidden Text::Prompt for hidden text}} format. Pictures and texts can be added via the extra window. Using {{c2::text}}; {{c3::text}}... etc creates addition notes for every iteration, as seen below. In order to see BOTH clozes on the same day you must uncheck the "bury related cards until next day" box (see above note).

An efficient way to make anki cards from lecture slides. See this website for more details.
This app is used to easily cover up portions of pics with the "back" of the card exposing those portions. Can occlude many different parts of an image to create multiple notes.
Click here and follow the instructions to download the Anki Occlusion app. You'll need to copy and paste a code into the Anki program.
Find a picture you want to occlude and copy it or use Snipping Tool on Windows 10 or Cmd+shift+4 on ios to take a picture of a portion of your screen. Then, under the add card window, click on the image occlusion button on the toolbar (#1). Make sure the rectangle is selected on the left panel (#2) and drag over the parts of the picture you want to occlude. Finally, select either "Add nonoverlapping occlusions" or "Add overlapping occlusions" (#3). If nonoverlapping occlusion is selected, each note will have all of the rectangles occluded (with the note-specific occlusion in a different color) while if overlapping occlusions is used, only the note-specific occlusion will be occluded.
This is one note of the OVERLAPPING occlusion type, where only the occlusion in question is covered up. If nonoverlapping occlusion were used, the axillary nerve branch would be occluded with a green rectangle.
Tags can be added to a card either during creation or after at the bottom of the window. Some premade decks, such as Brosencephalon, have all cards already tagged. This example will use Bros deck and nephrotic syndrome to show how to use these to your advantage.
First, download and import Bro's deck. Next, we need to find what the exact tag is we need. Click browse from the main page.
Click on the deck you want to search (#1), type in a keyword for the subject of choice (#2, nephrotic in this case), and note the tags on the bottom (#3). Sometimes you'll need multiple tags or it might not be efficient to use tags if they're too broad. See the note below for an alternative
Go back to the main page and click on the deck you want to use. Click Custom Study (#1), Study by card state or tag (#2), type 9999 into the "cards from deck" input to make sure all cards to used, click All cards in random order (cram mode) (#3), and finally Choose tags (#4). Select the "require one or more of these tags" box (#5), find and highlight the tag you want, click OK (#6), and a blue Custom Study Session Deck will be created
If it is the first time you do the cards, you will see them twice (first time then <10 minutes on default settings), then they will go back into the original deck. If you are using cards you've already done, they will immediately go back into the main deck. If you want to make the cards you do "count" in terms of reviewing schedule (ie, you want to see Hard cards the following day in the main deck), do the following: Click on the cogwheel next to Custom Study Session (#1) and enter the options menu. From there, check the "Reschedule cards based on my answered in this deck" box (#2) and then rebuild (#3). If you do not do this, the cards will go back in the deck at their ORIGINAL times, regardless of how you ranked the difficulty of the cards.
NOTE- If a tag is too general or is otherwise unsuitable, just highlight all the cards you want to do and move them to a new deck (An option at the top of the Browse window)
