is there a way to save this as a mp3 to play locally?

There isn't a direct download button in Gmail or YouTube to save a video as an MP3 file, but you can use an external tool to convert it.

Here are the most common ways to do this:

1. Online Video-to-MP3 Converters

There are many websites that can extract the audio for you.

If you plan on doing this often, using a dedicated application is safer and faster than web-based converters.

• 4K Video Downloader: A free desktop application (Windows/Mac) that lets you paste a YouTube link and choose to "Extract Audio" as an MP3.

To save the audio using VLC Media Player, follow these steps:

1. Copy the YouTube link you want to convert.

2. Open VLC Media Player.

3. In the top menu bar, click on Media and select Convert / Save... (or press Ctrl + R on Windows / Cmd + Shift + S on Mac).

4. Click on the Network tab at the top of the window.

5. Paste the YouTube link into the URL field and click the Convert / Save button at the bottom.

6. In the Convert window that appears, look for the Profile dropdown menu. Select Audio - MP3 from the list.

7. Next to Destination file, click Browse to choose where you want to save the file on your computer and give it a name (make sure the file extension ends in .mp3).

8. Click Start.

A progress bar will move across the bottom of VLC as if it is playing a video; once it finishes, your MP3 file will be saved in the folder you chose.

when i click start vlc pops off it makes a file but its 0kb

That 0 KB file issue happens because YouTube constantly updates its security protocols, which frequently breaks VLC's ability to directly stream or convert their links. VLC tries to create the file, but YouTube blocks the data stream, leaving you with an empty file.

The easiest way to get past this restriction without messing with VLC's internal code scripts is to use the Codec Location workaround:

1. In VLC, go to Media > Open Network Stream (or press Ctrl + N).

2. Paste the YouTube link and click Play instead of convert.   

3. If it plays, pause it immediately. Go to Tools > Codec Information (or press Ctrl + J).

4. At the very bottom, look for the Location field. Copy that incredibly long web link entirely.   

5. Open your normal internet browser (like Chrome), paste that long link into the address bar, and press Enter. The video will load by itself on a blank page.

6. Right-click the video, choose Save Video As..., and download it as an MP4.

7. Once it's on your computer, you can open VLC, go back to Media > Convert / Save, add your newly downloaded MP4 file, and convert it to an MP3 locally.

If VLC refuses to even play the link in Step 2, its internal YouTube script is entirely blocked by YouTube's latest security update. If that happens, using a dedicated free utility like 4K Video Downloader or an online tool like Y2Mate will be much faster, as they update their systems daily to bypass these blocks.

seems like there was a linux youtube viewer that allowed this. does that still work if i go to a linux pc?

Yes, you are likely thinking of youtube-dl or its modern, actively maintained successor, yt-dlp.   

These tools work incredibly well on Linux and are completely unaffected by the errors VLC gives you because they are updated constantly to bypass YouTube's blockades.

To do this on a Linux machine, you open the terminal and use a single command.   

How to use it on Linux:

Install the tool and its audio converter (FFmpeg):

1. Open your Linux terminal and type:

Run the MP3 download command:

yt-dlp is a command-line tool, but it is cross-platform. You can download the Windows version (yt-dlp.exe) and FFmpeg for Windows, drop them into the same folder, open your Windows Command Prompt, and run that exact same yt-dlp -x --audio-format mp3 command.
