Onda (A Surf App)
At Onda, I developed software to process nearshore ECMWF swell data from CDIP's open-source MOP model.
Part of the processing involves a swell detection algorithm, which extracts individual swells from the ocean's energy density at a given point in time and location. For example, see the animation below for Davenport, CA, where the dots represent detected swells. The Primary swell is always the swell with the largest energy density
Before choosing to use nearshore ECMWF swell data, we first had to find our source of swell data. The two options we found were Windy and CDIP's MOP nearshore model (labeled as NCEP and ECMWF). The NOAA offshore buoys and Surfline data are added for reference.
We built plots to compare all of the models across different locations. Here is a snippet of one comparison at Pleasure Point in Santa Crus. ECMWF seemed to be the most accurate. A few issues we noticed: Surfline seemed to over-report wave height, and Windy could not predict accurate forecasts for south-facing beaches (e.g., most of Santa Cruz).
Guidehouse
At Guidehouse, I helped develop and build models used in the energy space.
LCP (Low Carbon Pathways): A linear optimization tool used to develop pathways for a decarbonized future.
CHARM (Climate Hazard and Risk Mitigation) Model: A risk mitigation tool used to measure resiliency (storm events), reliability (aging), and capacity (overloading) risk for assets (e.g., transformers, poles, conductor, etc.) on the energy system.
FSSAT (Fuel Substitution Scenario Analysis Tool): A tool used to model outcomes (e.g., cost, emissions, etc.) of electrification in California given certain scenarios.
Demand Response Linear Regression: Lastly, I built multiple linear regression models used to evaluate the impact of demand response programs implemented by US utilities.
