Valley Springs Farm is owned and operated by John & Karen Gander. They bought the place in 1979, raised their family of seven children, milked registered Jerseys until the end of 1999 and, since then, have been raising purebred Black Angus beef cattle and now all registered Black Angus. John retired in 2007 as Dean of Industrial and Agriculture Programs & the Chief Academic Officer at Southwest Wisconsin Technical College. He consults for Trelay Land & Cattle Company, Livingston, WI on their Angus breeding program.

The 234 acre farm gets its name from the several bountiful springs that are located around the farm and flow continuously, supplying clear cold fresh water for the cattle. The terrain is hilly, with woods, pasture, and crop ground. We raise our own feed on rotated contour strips to minimize any soil erosion. We grown non-GMO corn.

We use the services of the Fennimore Vet Clinic for herd health and Reddy Ag Service for nutrition and ration consulting. We do our own artificial insemination selecting sires using EPDs, genomics, and visual appraisal to improve our beef quality, cattle phenotype, genotype, docility, and value as feeders and replacements, and carefully select our cleanup bulls to finish breeding.

We do ultrasound testing each year to appraise carcass improvement.  We select the best replacement heifers for our herd and several of the best steer calves to raise for retail beef sale. The rest are sold as replacement heifers, bulls , and feeder calves.

Our commitment is to raise high quality replacement heifers and bulls and to grow wholesome high quality beef that provides you a nutritious and great tasting eating experience every time you eat it.
