Week 3 - Brainstorming
Max's Idea
magic + board game
Pvp type board game
Something like yugioh, but instead of cards, we make it a board game
type : character, magic, trap
Everyone are assigned with same cards, competitiveness come from the strategic used by players
We design our own feature and stats, like XP and stuff
E.g. the UI are shown beside, we can refer a bit on that
exorcist vs ghost + board game
Trust, debating, and collaborative game
Everyone was assigned a character card in the beginning, everyone are exorcist, but minority of them has the ability to summon ghost to kill other players
assume it like the werewolf game, but we have our own role with respective abilities to do stuff
RED is ghost
GREEN LINE indicates voting
Everyone has their unique abilities as exorcist
3. “E” uses the ability to swap voting held on others
4. Instead of e-4 d-1, it will turns to a-4 d-1
Ghost advantage/victory
spaceship (sci-fi) + board game
PVP type board game
Play style like the conquering game (RISK), but instead we implement it in the spaceship way to feel fancy
human admires sci-fi things especially spaceships
We can make minion type spaceship, general type spaceship, and master type spaceship as the unit
Each player draws 2 card with mathematical equation, then they will choose one of the card to empower the unit they sent to battle
Figure 1.0: Card fight game
Figure 1.1 & 1.2: Mafia
Figure 1.3: Risk Board Game
Lavender's Idea
Food + board game
Collect the recipe pieces (have different level of difficulty), then can only proceed to collecting the ingredients needed and finishing the dish [main]. .
Rough ideas on chance & community card:
get the ingredient
instructed to wash the dishes (stop one round)
change the recipe with another player
exchange your ingredient with other player / in the grocery (bank)
Road to becoming a 5 star chef (another similar idea on food but with a more specific reason)
Figure 2.0 Colonist.io tutorial
Se Win's Idea
Life + board game
Idea 1: Reimagine life pre/post pandemic
Was thinking on some ideas that everyone can relate
However, I don’t have a general idea for the game design yet
Idea 2: Reimagine different life choices
Found out this game (The game of life) that is quite similar to our previous idea proposed by max
We can take this game as reference and redesign a board game that can delivery similar outcome but maybe not the winning situation of “richest” (can replace with happiness, knowledge, richest can gain XP or any value? I not sure. Maybe 3 variables of scoring will be graded to find out the winner)
Choices: studies, helping others, pets, houses, career, family, friends etc.
Fairytale
Inspired by the games: Carcassonne & Santorini
Both are building games
Reimagine yourself inside a fairytale story / place
Still thinking on the game mechanism…
Figure 2.1 The Game of Life tutorial
Figure 2.2 Santorini tutorial
1st Game Idea - Life Choices (inspired by the game of life)
3 grading method/requirement as Knowledge, Richness, Happy & Healthiness.
At the end of the game, 1st of each grading method/requirement will be rewarded 5 star, 2nd will be rewarded 2 star
Whoever has the highest star in the end of game wins
Starting point:
1. 10 beginning attributes will be distributed within 3 grading method. E.g. 5 knowledge 4 richness 1 happy & healthiness.
2. 6 characters they have different abilities,
3. 1 Rich = 50k, 1 h&h = 1 love, 1 knowledge = 1 brain
Replace cards with spinner (a spinner could have few occasions)
Stages/sections of life:
If one of the event require x knowledge, the player has not enough knowledge, then he misses the opportunity
Students -> Working Life (early, mid, late) -> Retirement
Early, mid, late working life has different event (late don't have any job change, but investment)
If choose to proceed study at early working life, they go to other side of the road, then join back to the working road in the middle (25 y.o.)
Type of decision:
Proceed study? Job change? Risk & reward game? Safe or risky route (investment)?
Marry or not marry? Getting children or not (number of child base on spin) ?
Buy building (the earlier we buy, the higher the inflation)?
Buy car or not (higher chance of getting good card where person without car can’t have, eligible to earn reward in some event)?
Choose what level of housing u wanted to buy
Reaching Retirement:
Child provides happiness, Wife provides happiness
Properties become richness
Knowledge determines what type of job u eligible to take on, not directly relating to salary
Knowledge and money determines if u can take onto higher studies
Bankrupt = disqualified because the player didn’t plan their life properly
Child & partner & travel = sacrifice money for h&h
Spin the wheel to see how much the travel cost, but the h&h remain the same
AR components:
Spin the Wheel
Decisions that are appearing to be chosen
Week 4 - Feedback + Brainstorming
Feedback (21 April 2022)
Mr. Charles
After we explain the first idea to Mr. Charles, he asked us to think on the following questions:
why appearing?
target audience?
what makes it unique?
what’s the point of the game?
Mr. Charles then told us to signify a problem statement
what can be better / not enough / too much / why the game takes long to play - the cause
center the main problem statement that give the reason to innovate
observation of particular game we studying
Mr. Charles then asked us to do netnography study, get online data and see what people say about this game (on steam maybe). He asked to to discover what is driving the player to come back to the game, what’s the thing that player will take back from the game, lingering thought on player itself that drive them to play the game.
Other questions about our first idea:
other than money, gold? diamond? love?
unique part: e.g. competition - why would you want to compete?
2nd Game Idea - Ice Breaking Game
Problem Statement
Instead of competing throughout the game, we can know each other also
Getting to know each other through their secrets
Helping players to reflect what happened in the past
With awards and penalties (move back)
Winning condition: reach the end (racing)
Wanted to know new friends (get to know other people)
Target audience: new group of friends
what’s the thing that player will take back from the game? Get to know more interesting life events/thoughts
3rd Game Idea - Childhood Game (HAVE FUN)
Ice and water (win condition: last one standing)
4th Game Idea - Food Theme Game (Chosen Idea)
Theme: Malaysia Food
Refer to “Survive” board, there’re hexagons on the board, they have 2 sides: the upward stating the categories of ingredients (spices, protein, vegetable…), while the [actual] ingredients will be hidden below, where you can only review it when u step on the pieces.
Action cards (challenges such as steal cards OR trade card) are also randomly placed in it, same as ingredients, it might be useful or might not, players can only know when they they stepped on the pieces.
As for the “recipe / instruction booklet”, ingredients needed to make the dishes will be given to all the players. Each recipes carries it’s own points based on the difficulty. The recipes can either (a) players decide on which dishes they want to make based on their available ingredients OR (b) randomly assign the recipe to players
Figure 3.0 Survive Board Game
Scenarios:
Base on case (b) above, after players done their dishes, they can decide whether they want to start another dish or not.
For example, if player A who got a recipe with low points finish the dish, he/she will have a chance. He/she must think on whether the ones with recipe with higher points (player B) will be able to finish their dish or not, if player B do, then player B will probably win, if player B are unable to finish, then player A will probably win.
In this scenario, player A would need to decide if he/she wants to get one more recipe/dish to work on. BUT if player A are unable to complete the dish = waste of food, so there will be point deduction.
Player missions: Randomly find the ingredients on the board and complete the dish.
Winning situation: after all the pieces are taken, the one who make the most dishes / dishes with different points (accumulate points) won. [still need to be implemented]
Action Cards:
Ideas on action cards (can have both good & bad ones):
(Good) x5
A chance to exchange one of ur ingredient with other player (exchange)
A chance to steal one of ingredient from other player (steal)
A chance to preview the ingredients [using AR] (preview)
Can replace any ingredient (replace)
Step on 1 of any tiles you want (jump? fly?)
(Bad) x3
Accidentally slipped on the floor, ingredient falled. Pick one of your ingredient and close it back (return)
Give one ingredient to the person next to you ( give)
Oooop one of your ingredient rosak, dispose it. (can specify meat maybe cause it get rosak easily) (expired?)
To answer Mr. Charles' question, in this game...
What we want in life but cannot get it easily?
Experience the feeling of being a chef with friends
What is driving the player to come back to the game?
when you feel the fun playing with your friend, thinking the strategy to win next game
What’s the thing that player will take back from the game?
don't be too greedy with the dishes, just do the things you can
lingering thought on player itself that drive them to play the game
the competitiveness, thoughts of i must win him/her next time
food & ingredients
Nasi Lemak (2 pandan + 1 Rice + 1 egg + 1 Nasi lemak special ingredient) +3
Char Kuey tiao (2 egg + 2 flour + 1 Char Kuey tiao special ingredients) +3
Roti Canai (2 flour + 1 spices + 1 butter + 1 Roti Canai special ingredients) +3
Satay (2 chicken + 1 spices + 1 satay special ingredients) +2
Ketupat + Rendang (2 pandan + 1 rice + 1 chicken + 1 ketupat special ingredient + 1 rendang special ingredients) +4
Kuih (1 flour + 1 egg + 1 butter) +1
Required 4 Pandan, 2 rice, 4 egg, 5 flour, 3 chicken, 2 spices, 2 butter to make all food
Week 5 - Feedback + Finalising the Game Idea
Feedback (26 April 2022)
After we explained our new idea (4th idea) to Mr. Charles, he agreed that food theme is a good idea.
Mr. Charles:
need to have a specific idea only can recognise the game play
focus on WHAT THE GAME IS and WHO are you as a player
concept has to be stronger
Questions:
what set the game UNIQUE?
WHY the players are coming back / hook them into the game?
what is the pattern of the game?
should the game be finished / solvable?
why do I need to play games that related to recipe?
Suggestions:
UNIQUE Malaysian food: food that player probably don't know, teaching the recipes, so that players could know that.
STRANGE food: interesting of the player finding recipe in a fantasy world
Mr. Faizal (guest speaker)
Get stronger benchmark
Find something near to your heart
Have a clear objective, obstacle and concept
Mechanics should be the last thing to think of
Try to use ONE sentence to define the game
Questions:
What is the game about?
create as much dishes?
create the best dish?
best recipe within the game?
What are the things required to play the game?
Suggestions:
The idea of new foods that excite you
Either collecting or exchanging different type/exotic of food
About the game:
What is this game about:
We are creating a game that will introduce and educate players on the exotic Malaysian foods from different ethnics.
Target audience:
Food lover, food appreciator
Takeaway:
Players will learn about the food itself, simple recipes, the ethnicity from which it originated, and a brief looking of the food.
Description:
A game that allow platers to get to know more unpopular foods from different Malaysia ethnics.
Game Mechanics:
All the recipes will be display throughout the game
Players would need to “fight” for it
Who collected pair of food from same ethnics will get extra marks
Game Details:
Ethnics + Foods:
Malay (Opok-opok, Emping)
Chinese (Kompia 光饼, ang zhao mee sua 红槽面线)
Indians (Gulab Jamun, Panipuri)
Perakanans (otak-otak, swikee)
Iban (Manok Pansoh) + Kadasan-Dusun (pinasakan)
Melanau (Umai, tebaloi)
We decided to have 6 group (7 ethnics) and each group will have 2 foods. We grouped the Iban and Kadasan-Dusun together because we could not find the second unique food from their ethnics.
Categories:
Spices
Vegetables
Meats
Seafoods
Staple Food
Add on/others
We also decided to have 6 categories to differentiate the ingredients on the upper part of the hexagons.
