PREDATORS AND PREY:
Predators (what they eat)-
Galápagos penguins primarily eat small fish and marine invertebrates. Their diet mainly consists of:
• Fish: They commonly feed on small species such as mullet, anchovies, and sardines.
• Squid: They also consume squid, which they catch while swimming underwater.
• Crustaceans: They occasionally eat crustaceans like shrimp.
Prey (what eats them)-
• Sharks: Sharks such as the Galápagos shark and hammerhead shark are known to prey on penguins, especially when they are swimming in open waters.
• Sea Lions: Galápagos sea lions can also be a threat to penguins. They are agile in the water and may hunt penguins, particularly juveniles or those that are weak.
• Birds of Prey: Some larger seabirds, such as frigatebirds and short-eared owls, have been observed preying on penguins, especially vulnerable chicks or weak individuals on land.
• Rats and Feral Cats: While not direct predators in the wild, introduced species like rats and feral cats, especially on the islands where they are present, may target penguin eggs or chicks.
