Size:
The Galápagos penguin is among the smallest species of the penguin. Their height ranges from 48-50 cm (19-20 in) and they weigh around 2-4 kg (4.4-8.8 lb). The size of the male is a bit larger than that of the female.
Colour:
The Galápagos penguin has black feathers on the backside and head, with a white belly below it.
It has:
1. A white border around the eyes, ear coverts and chin.
2. Two black bands across the chest, with the lower band extending down to its thigh.
3. A pale pink and black bill.
4. Patches of bare skin are found across the eyes, at the base of the bill, and on its legs.
Appearance of chicks:
Chicks are covered with a fluff of light grey, downy feathers.
Appearance of juveniles:
Juveniles have dark heads and greyer sides and chins. White patches of feathers are found on the cheeks as well.
Moult:
Some Galápagos penguins moult twice a year and lose even 40 percent of their body mass in these events.
