This project is all about social media's impact on society and me. I will explore things like social media addiction, user demographics, and how social media's presence has impacted society.
I took the "Am I Addicted to social media?" quiz, and not to my surprise, I found that I'm fairly addicted to social media. I often find myself scrolling on social media when I should be getting my work done, which is a barrier to me getting things done on time. Also, on many days, I wake up and get on social media, and spend an hour or even more scrolling. So, seeing my results on this test did not surprise me, it just confirmed my thoughts about it. This social media addiction is something I want to change. Limiting my time on social media will help me become much more productive in getting things done and help me focus on meaningful things rather than what SportsCenter posted.
I chose this graph because it shows that though there may be some social media platforms that certain age groups use more than others, every age group has a form of social media that they use. This shows that social media is present in every age group and also exemplifies its impact. Social media can display information to all age groups, you just need to know which age group uses the platform you choose the most. I also chose this graph because it's interesting to see YouTube's prominence; only YouTube and Facebook have the majority of all age groups using them.
Social media has a significant impact on society. It is an amazing tool that allows people to connect and find communities of people who share their views and interests. People of all ages use social media, and with so many people using it, it's bound to have some negatives. Social media has been misused to rally hate against certain people or companies, it gives people a platform to be disrespectful without fear of repercussion, and can be used to spread misinformation. While social media has its downsides, if you stay on the right side of the platform you use, you can be in some very positive spaces where you can laugh, learn, and explore.
What I learned from this project is that I spend too much time on social media and would benefit from decreasing my screen time so that I can focus on more important tasks. I also learned how widespread social media truly is. I didn't think older generations used social media that much, but from the Pew Research statistics, many of them use YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram. Everyone uses social media, and it has a significant impact on the society we live in today.
