I did my emerging technologies project on autonomous systems. I was inspired to choose this topic by a group that placed in Morgan State University's hackathon this year. They created an autonomous stretcher that is meant to help caregivers focus on patients while ensuring successful transportation to the operating room.
Autonomous systems are independently functioning systems in the world. These are technologies that can operate and adjust without human intervention. These can include self-driving cars, UAVs, trash-collecting robots, and even something like Roombas.
I learned that many innovations are being made to the technologies that are here today, and these innovations allow these technologies to be tailored towards our needs. Also, though these systems are effective in what they do, we should not become fully reliant on them because they can malfunction or break down and cause a major impact if we are not able to mitigate these effects. These systems are being monitored to certify their safety and ethicality to prevent potential risks. Lastly, I learned how autonomous systems are being used to aid in healthcare, agriculture, and transportation to ensure productivity, efficiency, and safety in our society.
