The purpose of this project was to determine how social media is affecting people like me and society as a whole.
After taking a social media addiction quiz, I ended up with the result saying I am fairly reliant on social media, but I am not addicted. I could definitely go without screens, or reduce my time for sure. The quiz told me that in the UK, adults spend over 8 hours a day on devices. I honestly think I may be around that point myself, so maybe it's time to take a few steps back.
I thought one of the most interesting statistic s on the Pew research sites was that a whopping 81% of adults use YouTube. I found this interesting, because a lot of the time when I am doing work, I will go on YouTube and listen to some ambiance music, or maybe an ASMR video to act as background noise so I stay focused. Seeing that statistic just made me think, "I wonder how many other people do the same thing as me?" The number is for certain in the millions, but it's still just crazy to think about.
I think that social media overall has a negative effect on society. Now it varies from person to person, as everybody's experience is different. For me personally, my social media experience is always just a combination of funny videos and other stupid things, but not for everyone. Sometimes on TikTok I will see people giving relationship advice that could ruin a person's relationship, or I will see someone giving advice on weightlifting, or some other topic that just isn't correct. The spread of misinformation on social media is crazy. That, plus the fact it is causing a huge inability to communicate and socialize with others in person is a massive issue. Sure there are some small upsides to social media, but for the most part I think it has an overall negative effect.
Doing this assignment, I ended up realizing that a lot more older people use social media than I originally expected. That, and also the fact that so many people agree with me on the fact social media has had a negative impact surprised me as well.
