For this project, the task was to compare and contrast two locations that were chosen by myself based on my own personal interest. The things being compared were:
Population, Demographics, Languages, Climate, Technology Usage and Culture, and the Technological Divide.
So what locations were chosen?
My choice of Kyoto was decided because of my interest in the area that was inspired by my manager at work. He recently went to Japan on vacation and told me all about how Kyoto was his favorite place by far. This made me interested in doing more research on the place.
Kyoto is a cultural center in Japan, known for its rich historical, religious, and cultural significance. Due to these factors and the lack of political importance, They were actually spared by the allied bombings during WWII. Kyoto has both industrial suburban areas, along with rural villages and temples, almost complete opposites of each other.
My choice of the country of Monaco was inspired by my interest in the world of motorsport. Monaco is a country with a rich racing history, hosting a Formula 1 race and WRC rally event on a yearly basis. This and some other interesting facts I knew about the country led me to choose Monaco.
Monaco is the world's second smallest country (0.75sq. miles), with a population of 31,400. It is located on the coast of France, and is known as a tax haven due to its complete lack of income tax and property tax. Many international corporations have their headquarters in Monaco for this reason.
Due to the unfortunate circumstances caused both by my own procrastination issues and scheduling conflicts, I never secured a partner for this assignment and had to do both locations on my own. However, aside from the missing points on the grade because of this, I actually prefer that it ended up being this way. I feel as if being able to do the research myself for both locations allowed me to learn much more about these regions than if I were simply presented with the facts. It was nice being able to use tools I learned about on word in order to organize my research better into headings and subheadings. In the future however, I would prefer to do my work earlier so that I wont miss out on points like this again.
