You should be able to
know the terminology used in number sequences
find the rule of sequence and next few terms in a given sequence
find a specific term given the general term of the sequence
find the general term given a sequence
solve questions involving sequences with geometrical shapes
Success Criteria:
I am able to
know terminology: term, sequence general term
find a specific term given a general term of the sequence
find the general term of the sequence from some specific terms
Always look through all examples in textbook before lesson.
Tn - Represents the Term at the position n.
Eg: T5 implies the term at position 5.
If the number increases or decreases consistently with the same value, the n will multiply by this value.
The constant term will be to find T0, ie to go back one term.
Eg 1: 5, 8, 11, 14, ....
All number increase by 3. [Ie: +3]
T0 is 2 [Go backwards 1 term: 5 - 3 = 2]
Hence Tn = 3n +2.
Check: T3 = 3(3) + 2 = 9 + 2 =11
Eg 2: 30, 26, 22, 18, ....
All number decrease by 4 [ie: -4]
T0 is 34 [Go backwards 1 term: 30 + 4 = 34]
Hence Tn = -4n + 34.
Check: T2 = -4(2) + 34 = -8 + 34 = 26
