At Fuzzy Towers, we know that a "red eye" or a "cloudy look" can be intimidating. But these conditions aren't just treatable—sometimes they are the only thing standing between an adoptable animal and a happy home. Here’s the "Eye-Q" on the common cases we tackle:
Imagine if your internal "windshield wiper" popped out of its socket. It looks like a bright red "cherry" in the corner of the eye. While some clinics simply remove the gland, we partner with veterinarians who perform the "tuck and tack" Morgan method. This method preserves the gland so the dog doesn't suffer from chronic dry eye later in life, which can cause vision issues and physical pain.
This procedure's cost can range from $1,500 - $2,000 in the New Orleans area, which is a significant barrier for many potential adopters of otherwise healthy adoptable animals.
Glaucoma happens when fluid in the eye doesn't drain properly, causing the internal pressure to rise. Left untreated, it’s like having a permanent, severe migraine—but with the right adopter and a steady drop schedule, many pets can maintain their vision and comfort for years.
These drops are affordable and accessible, but require a 2-3 drop daily dose and can be long-term. Proper education, practice, and a good pharmacy partner make this issue a minor one to manage.
One of the barriers to adoptability for rescue animals with eye issues is the very small number of specialized veterinarians, called ophthalmologists, who perform the surgeries required to permanently correct these treatable eye conditions. According to the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologist website, as of 2026 and there are five (5) veterinary ophthalmologists in the state of Louisiana, and two (2) of them are located in New Orleans.
Animal eye surgeries are expensive and there are few providers of them in our state. That's why Fuzzy Towers Animal Foundation got involved.
We don't do this alone. Fuzzy Towers is proud to work with the best veterinary ophthalmologists in the Greater New Orleans area. If you are a pet owner or another rescue needing specialized care, these are the experts we trust:
Metairie Veterinary Ophthalmology Services (MVOS)

Pro-Tip for Adopters: Both of these clinics are specialists. While your regular vet is great for check-ups, we always recommend a board-certified ophthalmologist for anything involving eyeballs.
