Obesity, diabetes, and skeletal muscle

Obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D) have reached epidemic proportions in western countries and recently has also started to attack developing countries. Obesity and T2D, and the associated complications significantly impact the life quality and life expectancy of patients. Increasing evidence suggest obesity and T2D affect muscle function. We recently found that obesity and T2D significantly impair muscle regeneration as well as growth and development.

We are currently studying the mechanism underlying the negative impact of obesity and T2D on skeletal muscle and are also seeking approaches to alleviate the impact.

IHC showing reduced muscle regeneration in obese mice fed with high-fat diet compared to control mice at 3 days and 7 days after cardiotoxin-induced muscle injury. Green, laminin. Red, embryonic myosin (regenerating muscle fiber). Blue, dapi.
