In this episode of Clay Mastermind: Mental Excellence & Industry Insights, Dawn Grant sits down with longtime competitive shooter, instructor, writer, and women’s shooting advocate Dee Orr for a conversation that moves from elite performance to one of the most successful initiatives bringing women into Sporting Clays.

Dee’s rise in the sport happened quickly. After getting involved in Sporting Clays in the early 2000s, she became the 2005 Maryland State Lady Champion, represented Team USA in England in 2008 when the team won gold, and became a longtime All-American. She also began writing for Clay Shooting USA. Dee shares in the episode that she is being inducted into the NSCA Hall of Fame and receiving the Hal duPont Service Award. 

But some of Dee’s most valuable lessons aren't about mechanics.

Dee and Dawn dive into the battle between the analytical mind and the instinctive skills needed to perform. Dee explains how she analyzes a target, makes her plan—and then deliberately releases that thinking so she can trust her eyes and hands. Her simple reminder: look at the target and trust what you see. 

They also discuss competition pressure, why shooters become too careful when scores matter, learning to focus one target at a time, and why sometimes the breakthrough happens when you finally let go. 

Then Dee shares the story and mission of the FSCA Honey Belles, a Florida Sporting Clays Association initiative designed to make women feel comfortable and confident entering the shooting sports. Through education, women teaching women, beginner clinics, affordable access, and a supportive community, the program has introduced more than 1,200 women to the sport. 

It's a conversation about shooting—but even more about trust, focus, community, confidence, and getting out of your own way.

Fall our favorite Season! It marks the start of our Honeybelle Clinics.

Heartfelt thanks to all of our Honeybelle Alumni and Coaches. We couldn’t do it without you. Please share the clinic schedule with your friends and family. The schedule for fall is attached and also on our website. They can also find us by searching FSCAHoneybelles through a search engine.  Last year Lynnette and Sylvia handled the clinic administration with lots of new innovations like online registration. We had a good year and hope to touch many more this season. You can still email FSCAHoneybelle@gmail.com , like before, if you have any questions at all or need help registering. We have 5 more ladies getting NSCA certified to coach this Fall and have added Teneroc to the Clinic schedule.

Our FALL FUN SHOOT on November 8 is up on Scorechaser for registration. We have added a high team prize just for bragging rights – get your squads together and register. Please note squad requests.  Quail Creek has kept the price down for us again this year so the $110 fee includes Lunch and a golf cart for each squad. I know Cody and the kitchen staff will have a wonderful lunch for us. Last year we did shoot-offs for any ties. It was so much fun we will be doing that again this year. All of the ladies in the shoot offs were very impressive and it was fun to watch. Justin doesn’t like long shoot-offs so the targets were challenging. The Belt Buckle trophies are on order. Thanks to all of you who voted.

Dee will be selling green bird tickets to draw for a flat of ammo $10.  Registration will open at 8, Safety Briefing at 9 and shooting begins at 9:30. For a change of scenery we will be using the Blue course. It will be friendlier than a registered, but a little more challenging than the red. You all are getting GOOD!!!

The Summer Traveling League was fun and we visited all of our clinic host clubs. Sharon Bell was our HOA for the league, congratulations to her and all the ladies that came out this summer to shoot.

Our partner shoot at Quail Creek on September 13th was a lot of fun.  Nick and Kristine Jarriel came away with a 98 on some really challening targets. Thank you to all of the couples who came out to participate.

Vero Beach Clay Shooting Sports has been running a Wonder Woman Wednesday program for Ladies this year. If you get a chance… join us. The group gathers @9:30 a.m. and squads up. Coach Sharon Bell is coordinator.

Which reminds me...  Shout out to A Girl and A Gun. They do a terrific job and we have lots of crossover members.
