Cicero-North Syracuse High school had always live-streamed games to their YouTube channel CNS Athletics-The NorthStar Network. These Live streams were pretty bland - just a silent stream with the camera following the game. Then on March 16, 2020, Covid-19 shut down school events for the remainder of the school year and summer prompting CNS Athletics to change for the better...
The Covid-19 pandemic prevented fans from attending sporting events creating a huge reliance on live-streamed games via The NorthStar Network. After a very quiet and boring fall season of silent games, excluding the occasional field hockey game that Giovanni Heater commentated, the transition of streaming sports during the pandemic was dreadful. This all changed for the winter season when Giovanni, Kyle Marchak, and I put our ideas together following a discussion of our mutual ambitions to become sports broadcasters. We decided we needed to take initiative and bring more enjoyment to the current silent broadcasts that our school was displaying. This led to a zoom call with our high school's Athletic Director, Tim Bednarski asking if he would be okay with us commentating the games on CNS Athletics, he absolutely loved and supported the idea. This left us with only one problem: Technology.
Technologically savvy are talents that describe many. Gio, Kyle, and I sadly are not on that list. Luckily for us, we have a good friend Spencer Congel, who may be the most educated person I know when it comes to the in's and out's of technology. After a little persuasion in the form of promised dinners, we convinced Spencer to join our crew and teach us everything we needed to know about setting up a broadcast such as, linking cameras to a live stream, working a sound board, creating graphics, running commercials/ads, live action replays, and so much more. It's safe to say that with the addition of Spencer producing and teaching us, Kyle, Gio, and I all became better broadcasters.
Along the way we experienced multiple technical challenges. The first challenge came in the form of equipment. As anyone who works with technology will tell you, it is expensive. This meant that we had no room to experiment and needed to know exactly what we needed and nothing more. Another issue we ran into came with the technology. Once we had the equipment necessary, we would have the occasional hiccup such as sound cutting out, the camera disconnecting from the stream, the stream freezing, etc., but as they say in show biz, the show must go on and that is exactly what we made happen.
With our crew determined, it was time to start broadcasting basketball season and our efforts paid off almost immediately. We were receiving extremely high praise and we were raking in thousands of views per game while also getting better and better at commentating with each broadcast. After an extremely successful basketball season, we were excited for the challenges that the outdoor spring sports season would bring, but there was a hole we needed to fill first. With our whole crew being quite busy beyond broadcasting we found ourselves looking for an extra member. *Insert Owen O'Keefe* Owen was a great fit to the crew because he also shared our love of sports broadcasting and it gave me a partner for the next year when I would've been the only returning member of the group.
Owen, Kyle, Spencer, and I finished out the spring 2021 lacrosse season without Gio due to his being the captain and starting goalie of the boy's lacrosse team. With three crowd-pleasing seasons under our belt we all felt as if we had really made a difference at CNS. Owen and I started preparations for our upcoming senior year of programming.
And then August 18, 2021 my club soccer coach sent me a life changing email. I was offered a full scholarship to play soccer in Ochtrup, Germany for three months spanning from September 1st to December 1st. This opportunity would require me to unenroll from high school for the first semester and leave the NorthStar network solely in Owen's hands for the fall season until I returned from this once in a lifetime opportunity.
