WILDFLOWER MEADOWS & GRASS MEADOWS
Add species surveys, add a few photos - links to albums of pictures. projects.
Until 2018, the grassy areas of this Queen Elizabeth Park were regularly mown and provided very little habitat or food for wildlife. When the Friends of Queen Elizabeth Park group was formed we worked with South Kesteven District Council to change the management regime to benefit wildlife and people.
In July 2019 the Lincolnshire Naturalists Union undertook a survey of the park to give a baseline of species (flora, fauna, insect life etc) within the park before improvement work began.
Thanks to the volunteers, 1.5 hectares is now cut for hay annually and other, smaller areas are under community volunteer management.
The volunteers have worked with Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust to create wildflower areas. (see the Map and areas 6 and 12 - Restoration Meadow and Woodland Glade in the Conservation Area).
Subsequent species surveys have shown how much the areas have improved, and Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust designated Queen Elizabeth Park a Local Wildlife Site.
