Queen Elizabeth Park is nestled in the heart of Grantham, along the River Witham. It has been awarded Green Flag status for the third year running.
It was once privately owned grazing land which is why some of the fields have become small pockets of space, divided by hedges.
It was purchased by the Council in 1979 and officially opened a year later on 20th November 1980. It was named after HM Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother in the year of her 80th birthday.
The park boasts extensive woodland, play areas and a commemorative Diamond Grove, planted to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2012.
Sixty silver birch trees were planted in a diamond shape in the park, with a native oak planted at the heart of the grove.
More recently, Queen Elizabeth Park has undergone significant improvement works following the final phase of the Witham/ Slea Blue Green Corridor project.
The project aimed to restore and improve the ecology of the River Witham , surrounding riverbanks and nearby green-spaces. Three ephemeral ponds have been dug – these are fed by ground water, and have a variable depth. The central portion of each pond should remain wet all year round but the edges will dry out in warmer weather. They have been planted with species suitable for each section of the ponds – depending on how much water the plant roots like.
