Connecticut’s historic and scenic Route 146 has the distinction of being listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It passes through four National Register Historic Districts and some of the most visually accessible coastline in Connecticut, offering sweeping vistas of salt-marsh estuaries.
Our mission is to preserve the unique historical, scenic, recreational and residential character and ensure continued public enjoyment of Historic Route 146.
The Friends of Historic Route 146 come from near and far. We are residents, neighbors, visitors, motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians who use and love this unique and special place.

Principles
Preservation: Manage Route 146 as a special resource and treasure for all. It passes through four National Register Historic Districts: Guilford Town Center, Route 146, Stony Creek/Thimble Islands, and Branford Town Center.
Safety: Safety for cyclists and pedestrians is paramount.
Community Resource: This is not only home to many, but a community resource valued by all. Manage the road for the benefit of the residential communities it serves.
Quiet Enjoyment: This is a rare oasis of calm surrounded largely by natural preserve with rich wildlife. It is a public good which benefits the health and well being of all. Our appreciation and need for this resource has significantly increased during the time of Covid.
Historic Preservation: Honoring and remembering history is key to preserving our civil society.
Natural Areas Management: This plan requires a high-level of sensitivity to best natural areas practices to support a healthy ecosystem.
Rising Tides and Storm Risk: Recognize the increased risk without abandoning the historic and scenic nature of the road.
