Howard University’s Freshman Seminar is a single-credit, pass or fail course offered every fall semester. This course is required of all First Time In College (FTIC)/Freshman students. The course is designed to ease the student's transition from high school to college life and prepare students for collegiate success beyond their first year. In addition, this interdisciplinary cohort experience will center on experiential learning and innovative pedagogy through critical debates clustered around required readings, guest speakers, local excursions, current events, and emerging themes. Students will identify, discuss and reflect upon academic, career, and personal goals. Seminar participants will be introduced to the legacy of Howard University and unique opportunities for Howard Experience by becoming acquainted with the higher learning landscape and being immersed into the culture of Chocolate City and the Greater Washington D.C. metro community.
Overall, the seminar seeks to enhance academic performance by:
● Helping students acquire a better understanding of college life;
● Helping students to understand the nature of a liberal arts education;
● Helping students develop coping, critical thinking, problem-solving, and research skills;
● Helping students build useful college skills like effective reading, note-taking, test-taking, and time management;
● Introducing students to helpful college resources such as community engagement, study abroad, career services, and much more!
