THREE TIPS

Here are three tips to assist you in moving forward. I find it helpful to read quotes, in fact Oprah Winfrey highly recommends reading quotes and so does Winston Churchill, because quotes are concentrated thoughts.

I think I age myself if I say that "these are smartphone apps," because virtually every phone being sold now is a smartphone. So we might as well call them phone apps. Or mobile phone apps. We want to reduce the time that we spend looking at screens, and there's nothing faster than flipping from page 46 to the dictionary in the rear of the phrasebook and I can do that much more quickly using a phrase book

A lecture can stimulate and guide a group of people towards an objective, but can that lecture in fact be given as a video (the day before the class takes place)? And the time taken as a group would be better spent perhaps listening to each other's summary of the lecture so that we would in fact hear the lecture at least twice because

(1) first the professor would make the 15 or 20 minute lecture, and

(2) then at the class meeting the five or ten points would be written on the board and the students would each declare what the points were about and could even come up in groups to say "Okay, these are the five most important points". And then there could be presentations during the class so that the teacher knows that the information has been transferred.

This might be a way for students to demonstrate Mastery or at least understanding of basic points in the lecture that was recorded. See www.mastery.org

It is clear that the time of the lecture is gone (when the lecture was the primary source of information). Even text books are less likely to be looked at and instead students find much of the information more quickly and with greater animation by going to other sources. I like going to YouTube and learning what John Green has to say in his crash course about history and often the demonstrations on purple math can help revive information in my head or SOS math.com
