Media Commentary
Media Commentary
For this assignment, I explored the phenomenon of education which is entertaining, coined edutainment, specifically through instances found on YouTube. It is a long existing format that can take many forms, such as videos, computer games, puzzles/worksheets, teaching, and in professional work. I posed some important questions regarding edutainment, “Is watching too much YouTube good or bad even if it's educational, what if you don’t want to learn because learning is boring, and is it a waste of time to watch video after video can real positive effects actually happen?”. Each question served as a category which helped me determine that it is possible to learn from a YouTube video, that fun learning can inspire and catch the interest in order to promote learning, and that meaningful change can happen though only if the consumer puts in the proper effort.
After my analysis, I found that the media format of edutainment specifically on YouTube, and edutainment in general is a concept that holds a lot of potential for true learning and even positive change. The goal of edutainment appears to be working towards inspiring and catching the interest of passers-byers in order to promote learning. The lure being entertainment and the hook being education. Although, it is up to the consumers of the content to determine how much they really want to get out of it and to pick the right information to learn from.
I am proud of my Media Commentary assignment and topic, as the topic of Edutainment is something I have wanted to cover and explore for a long time. I am partially fond of this quote I developed, “The goal of edutainment appears to be working towards inspiring and catching the interest of passers-byers in order to promote learning. The lure being entertainment and the hook being education,”. I feel as though it encompasses the idea of edutainment in a solid way. As well as this, I believe the format of answering questions was a successful way to relay the idea of covering Edutainment on YouTube in an honest and critical view. Although these questions came up after the development of my script/information. As I wrote down all that I wanted to cover, then I expanded and cut down in places. I feel the information I compiled and the ideas I developed were able to meet the concept of covering Edutainment on YouTube in an honest and critical way. I believe the conclusion I developed was well representative of my topic.
