Cultural Artifact
Cultural Artifact
For this assignment, I explored a piece of media that interested me and utilized course concepts that we discussed in class. In particular I looked at the Lego Movie and the course concept of representation. I presented to our class and lead an engaging discussion regarding important factors of this concept of representation.
With everything in mind, I found that The Lego Movie has its fair share of representation of experiences, social issues, diversity, particular groups, and ideas. Mostly integral, The Lego Movie gives representation of experiences by portraying how people interact with the Lego in a deeper way than may be expected.
Discussion Questions:
1) Similar to how The Lego Movie made me feel represented in experience, what is one piece of media you felt like you've been represented by in some way? How did it make you feel?
2) It can be said that The Lego Movie has some good examples of representation, but doesn’t cover all the bases. So, why should focusing on full and proper representation be a goal for the media? And what are some ways we can continue the process of giving proper representation?
3) Similar to how The Lego Movie 2 builds on some of the original Lego Movie’s shortcomings in representation. What is a piece of media or franchise, which has shown improvement in topics, particularly in that of representation? Is improvement this enough?
