Reflect

At which level in the progressions do you NOW place yourself for each of your four chosen competencies?

My competencies after TLI

Overreaching Competency #1 Interpersonal Effectiveness- nearing performing

It was difficult for me to express a professional vision to colleagues in a manner that can be understood, confident, yet not be passive. I am now able to effectively community by building empathy and trust. I am still working on inspiring others to take action to make change.

Overarching Competency #2 Group Processes - nearing performing

At this time I understand how to navigate through difficult situations while respecting others. I have been exploring roles as a teacher leader in small groups, such as union committees. I have build my confidence in myself and leadership and am able to effectively manage a larger group and guide them through conflicts. Sometimes, I still I avoid conflicts and allow others to take the lead in these situations.

Foundational Competency Diversity-Equity-Cultural Competency- Collaborate Purposefully - performing

Since being in TLI, I am so much more aware of diversity, equity, and cultural influences. Diversity, equity, and cultural competency are not just words anymore, they are actions for myself. I knew I have always been equitable in my classroom but realized I wasn't relating and listening to my colleagues. Now I don't "assume" things in school meetings and take into account I don't know what they are going through or where they have been. I am now able to listen and consider diversity in my building. I understand now diversity can be beliefs, thoughts, or privilege. Being respectful and equitable (and being mindful) has made it easier to collaborate with an open and willing mind.

Specific Leadership Pathway Competency: Instructional Leadership: Collaborative Relationships - performing

I have always understood the need to work collaboratively for a productive environment and have been a “team player.” I am learning and understanding the policies behind the practice and able to engage effectively while stating my own opinions and not offending others. I have created a few collaborative documents for our school and have volunteered for more leadership roles.

How did the TLI experience-both curriculum and Capstone project-impact your growth as a teacher leader in each of your four chosen competencies? What evidence supports each of your claims? Before TLI I didn't didn't really think about change and causes. Understanding diversity, equity, and cultural competency has probably been my biggest growth, as I am now 'seeing' what is going on. Collaboration, group process, and being personally effective all go together. I have more confidence to speak up, I have taken on more leadership roles, and I am aware of what is happening in my union. I have learned about and participated in change by contacting my local representative on issues.

What are your next steps to continue your growth as a teacher leader? I have already begun! During TLI I was asked to become part of the executive board for our school union, and I accepted. I don't think I would have without the confidence I have gained throughout this course. I will continue to grow by taking on more leadership roles.

What was the most valuable part of the TLI process for you? I believe one of the most valuable things I have learned by attending TLI is that I have biases. Realizing and understanding my biases helps me to relate to my coworkers more effectively.

Elected to the Executive board!
