Speech, Language, & Communication

Speech: the process of orally forming sounds; the neuromuscular act of producing sonds that muscles involved in speech are coordinated by the brain to produce the language (Kuder, 2018)

Language: exchanging information through receptive and expressive means that are understood using symbols, possible without speech (Kuder, 2018)

• Receptive Language (INPUT): understanding of information that is delivered

• Expressive Language (OUTPUT): used to deliver information and convey a message

(3) Features of Language: 

• Language communicates

• There is communication, but not enough to describe it

• Arbitrary symbols

Communication: the process participants use to exchange information, ideas, needs, and desires (Kuder, 2018)

(4) Necessary Components:

• A sender of the message

• A receiver of the message

• A shared intent to communicate

• A shared means of communication
