Inside the walls of the Fort is the Bailey.
The Bailey allows for shelter during attack though this one is designed more like a courtyard or small town square than a space meant to hold armies and siege weapons. It holds the Training Grounds, Archery Field, Blacksmith's, Garden, and Stables.
After crossing the drawbridge one will come to a path made of smooth sea glass and crushed bits of sea shells. It runs down the center of the Bailey to the steps of the Great Hall. The path is lined with summer flowers with openings to the other structures of the Bailey.
Perhaps the strangest feature in the Bailey are the poles. There are a number of tall sturdy poles scattered around that have a small platform on top. No banners or lights hang from them. There is no easily discernible way to get up there, no notches or ladders or even jumping puzzles.
They are designed solely for Avengers of the Spider persuasion to swing from. A gift from the Summer Queen to one of her favorite pets.
The Training Grounds are a large circular area big enough for multiple people to practice hand-to-hand or weapons combat at the same time.
The ring is made of the finest white beach sand and even if someone accidentally gets hurt and bleeds, the sand never stains. It is forever sparkling white.
No matter how much it is kicked up, the sand is pristine and perfectly flat the next morning. At night it seems to give off a faint glow.
There are no weapons on offer. Anyone who wants to train has to bring their own. Or they can see if the Blacksmith's has any.
Next to the Training Grounds are three long perfectly straight tracts of the same beautiful white sand. Each lane is marked off by knee high fences of driftwood also a pale shimmery white.
Each tract is a different length. The first one directly next to the Training Grounds is the shortest at 20 yards long. The second is 60 yards long. The last is 100 yards long.
At the end of each is a single target made of thick ship rope and painted with the circular rings of a target.
Just like the Training Grounds no bows or arrows are provided. Anyone who wants to use the Archery Fields will have to bring their own.
Just beyond the Archery Fields is the Blacksmith's.
This blacksmith's is definitely not as grand as the blacksmith's in town. It has a modest forge out front built on large, flat, hexagonal stones. The anvil that sits in front of the forge is encrusted with barnacles from the foot up to the waist. They seem to hold it steady to the large stump of driftwood it sits on. When the bellows are used it sounds like the winds of a summer thunderstorm.
Behind the forge itself is a workshop/storage area. There are some minor leather working tools in here if the resident blacksmith wants to make simple things like scabbards, quivers or belts. However it is mostly meant for the storage of raw materials and tools.
There is even a very small living quarters attached to the side of the Blacksmith's though it is barely more than a hearth and a cot. It is not meant for comfort and almost seems to be an afterthought to the rest of the building.
Much like the Blacksmith's the Stables are not terribly large or grand but appear to be made from an upturned ship that has been hollowed out and repurposed into a stables.
There are six stalls that line a wide center aisle. Two stalls are currently occupied by steeds. Each stall has porthole windows that would allow any riding animal kept inside to look out onto the Bailey.
At each end of the stalls is a tack room meant for the keeping and care of saddles, bridles and any other tack. There is, thoughtfully, a lance rack because clearly these Avengers mean to be grand knights of the realm.
Above the stalls is a hayloft. The hayloft looks down into each stall allowing for whomever is caring for the animals to toss hay and straw directly into the stalls.
There is a covered riding arena as part of the stables that can also double as a small turn out for the riding animals.
These have been lovingly constructed by the Summer Queen who has chosen good looks and elegance over reasonable growing space.
At the center of the gardens is a memorial fountain to the late Queen. It depicts her heroic battle with the hydra that attacked the castle. She rides upon a manatee, both wear resplendent opalescent armor, and the Queen wields a wicked looking trident made of pure silver that is stabbed right through the hydra's heart. Water pours from the wound and out of the hydra's mouths. The basin of the fountain has a mosaic of cut off hydra heads. It's highly possible their eyes are made of actual pearls in white, black, and pink.
The fountain does serve a purpose besides being a memorial. It's meant to provide water to the raised beds and flower beds of the garden. Even in the coldest temperatures the water will not freeze.
The gardens themselves seem to be able to grow anything as long as it is considered a "summer crop". Fruits, vegetables, flowers, herbs, weeds. Any plant related to summer. There's a whole bed reserved just for dandelions.
There is no obvious hive in the gardens but big, fat honeybees can be found everywhere within its borders. They disappear in the winter when the gardens shrink in size but come back in summer.
