Getting an Instrument for your child

We are excited to have your child start participating in band at Ford! The following is a guide to getting your child started right with playing a band instrument in middle school.

There are three ways you can get a band instrument for your child
(if they do not have one):

Renting one from a music store

One of the best ways to get an instrument for your child is to rent one from a local music store. Local music stores in the area offer high-quality instruments to rent from $22 to $30 per month. Almost all of them have low or no-interest financing also offer insurance and repair services while it is being paid off.

If regular payments are made, the instrument is usually paid off by the middle of eighth grade. If your child is interested and committed to participating in band, this is the best way to getting them a high-quality instrument they can use for many years.

Buying a band instrument

Buying an instrument straight away is a big commitment, but if you know your child will be participating in band for a while, then buying a new or used instrument could be a good idea and save you money in the long run…

BEWARE of new instruments on websites like eBay or Amazon that are in the $100 or less range. These instruments look great, but often break, are difficult to repair, and cause a lot of frustration for beginners.

In many cases, buying a used instrument in decent shape is better in the long run than buying a super-cheap new instrument. There are many deals on used student instruments to be found on sites like OfferUp and Craigslist. As with any used item, some repair work may be needed to bring the instrument into playing condition.

Applying for a school-owned instrument

School-owned instruments are available to rent for families with high financial need.

Students who rent a school-owned instrument will be guaranteed to get an instrument that is clean and playable. It is the family’s responsibility to furnish the accessories (reeds, cleaning supplies, etc.) necessary for success in band.

Our school also has an inventory of instruments that are difficult or expensive to rent for more advanced students (bass clarinets, tubas, bassoons, etc.)

If you already own an instrument:

If your family has an instrument already, then you are ready to go!

It is generally a good idea to get the instrument cleaned and checked by an expert before getting started. Most music stores offer a general cleaning and tune-up (often called a “PC” or “play check” service) starting for about $45. It is highly recommended to do this before the child gets started playing.
