Esraj

Esraj is an Indian stringed instrument found in two forms throughout the Indian subcontinent. It originated in the 17th century and by Indian terms, a quite young instrument. Esraj is one of the main accompanying instruments for Rabindra sangeet in Shantiniketan. The esraj has a sister instrument called the Dilruba. Esraj has four main strings and all strings are metal. The Esraj is played with a bow. Its Sound is produced with the help of the left hand fingertips but strings are never pulled like the sitar. It gives a sound very much like an instrument called "sarangi". Esraj is played with a bow in sitting position on a carpet, but can be played seated on a stool as well while resting the corpus on the lap. Most players rest the neck on the left shoulder while others let the instrument stand freely, supported by the fingering hand.
