This is one of the main forms of dance of Indian origin that is endemic to Tamil Nadu. Bharatanatyam is one of the oldest classical dance tradition in India. The Bharata Natyam tradition is based on the gestures of the upper body, bent legs and knees and the muscles of the hands, expressions(bhava)and hand gestures. In the past it was confined to Hindu temples, but today it has started to expand beyond that.
