Stopping/Waiting Laws

Due to an error with the Firestone Traffic Revision Act, it is recommended to only park, stop, or wait in areas specifically designated for parking, stopping, or waiting.

The following are improper manners in which to stop a motor vehicle:

  • In any area where it is prohibited to stop (road markings/signage)
  • More than 1 stud away from the curb.
  • Facing the wrong direction in traffic.
  • On any roadway with a speed limit ≥ 60s/s.
  • On any highway on/off ramp.
  • Within 30 studs of any fire hydrant or fire lane.
  • Inside a tunnel or within 20 studs of an entrance thereof.
  • On a sidewalk or median.
  • At any hospital exit/entrance/dropoff.
  • On any sunken curbstone/sidewalk.
  • In any manner whereby it is legally or physically impossible to pass your vehicle.
  • On any bike lane.
  • On any buffer zone. (see note at bottom of page)
  • On or next to any safety zone. (see note at bottom of page)
  • In any manner whereby they block an intersection or pedestrian/traffic flow.
  • In any roundabout.
  • Next to any sidewalk painted red.
  • In any area not designated for waiting (see below).

The following are improper manners in which to wait:

  • In an area where it is prohibited to wait (DO NOT BLOCK, X, etc.)
  • In an intersection.
  • On a crosswalk
  • On railroad tracks or immediately thereabout.
  • In any manner which whereby they could endanger the public.

You are exempt from all the above if authorized to stop or wait in the area. This can be indicated by signage or road markings.

A safety zone is any area at the edge of a roadway marked with diagonal lines which prohibits entering for any reason, including parking, stopping, or waiting.

A buffer zone is an area marked with diagonal lines between a bike lane, parking lane, or bus lane from the moving flow of traffic. This may be entered to legally enter the respective area but may NOT be stopped on.
