Buenavista, Guimaras โ In celebration of this yearโs Fish Conservation Week, the Province of Guimaras through its Provincial Office for Agricultural Services, in partnership with the Department of Agriculture - Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Region 6 (DA-BFAR 6), conducted an Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) campaign on fisheries management on September 18, 2024. The event brought together over 100 fisherfolk, local government officials, bantay dagat members, and representatives from the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Councils (FARMC) from across the province's five municipalities.ย
Hon. Samuel T. Gumarin, municipal mayor of Buenavista, underscored the crucial role of sustainable fisheries in maintaining food security and promoting local food tourism in his message.
Experts delivered a series of lectures on key topics in fisheries management. Ms. Ailed Villaruel and Ms. Diana Dela Cruz from the National Stock Assessment Program highlighted the significance of Fisheries Management Area (FMA) 11 and its progress, emphasizing how managing fishery resources in designated areas ensures the long-term sustainability of fish stocks.
Dr. Ma. Cecilia P. Farrol, the Provincial Fisheries Coordinator, also discussed the rationale behind the celebration in her opening message, highlighting the collaboration aimed at uplifting Guimaras' fisheries sector.
During the campaign, DA-BFAR 6 turned over fishing equipment, including fish tubs, gillnets, and a marine engine to selected fisherfolk in support of the local fishing community.
The Bureau reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding aquatic resources and enhancing food security. As the province of Guimaras celebrates Fish Conservation Week, the province continues to champion efforts that promote sustainable fisheries and secure its future food supply.
