Dr. Erwin E. Ilaya, the Bureau's Chief of the Fisheries Management, Regulatory, and Enforcement Division, served as the keynote speaker during the Fish Conservation Week Symposium of Northern Iloilo State University (NISU) held on September 19, 2024, at the NISU Concepcion Campus in Concepcion, Iloilo.ย
More than 300 students and faculty members from the College of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences of NISUโs Main and Concepcion campuses attended the symposium. Dr. Ilaya highlighted the crucial role of Fisheries Management Areas (FMA) in ensuring the sustainable use of the country's marine resources and called for increased engagement in environmental protection efforts within the academic community.ย
The symposium was part of NISUโs FISHTIVAL 2024, which featured activities aimed at raising awareness about sustainable fishing practices and marine conservation. The event emphasized the need for responsible resource management to safeguard marine ecosystems for future generations.
The College of Fisheries and Allied Sciences organized the FISHTIVAL 2024 in celebration of the 61st Fish Conservation Week, with the theme "Sama-Sama Tungo sa Maunlad at Likas-Kayang Pangisdaan sa Bagong Pilipinas.
