DA-BFAR 6 Launches FMA 11 Guide at IMBF 2024

In yet another first for Fisheries Management Area (FMA)11, the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Regional Office VI (DA-BFAR 6) launched the SEAtizenโs Field Guide to Commercially Important Fishes in FMA 11 yesterday, April 20, at the 7th Edition of the Iloilo Mega Book Fair (IMBF) held in SM City Iloilo.
Editors DA-BFAR 6 Regional Director Remia A. Aparri, Fisheries Production and Support Services Division Chief Joel t. Abalayan, and National Stock Assessment Program (NSAP) Leader Sheryll V. Mesa, led the launching together with co-publisher Prof. Noel Galon de Leon of KasingKasing Press and Founder of IMBF.
Compiled from the National Stock Assessment Program (NSAP) data spanning from year 2016 to 2018, this field guide spotlights the Top 20 fish species, providing taxonomic information, diagnostic characteristics, and in-depth information on their biology and fisheries. The publication was a result of a collaborative effort of the Bureau with various local government units (LGU) in the Provinces of Capiz, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental.ย
Director Aparri, in her presentation, expressed the Bureauโs continued commitment to educate the public about the importance of the making conscious choices in buying and consuming responsibly-caught seafood.
โWe have been going to the fishing communities to work with our fisherfolk and we are happy for this opportunity to educate the consumers and the general public about our work and how they can contribute to protecting our seafood industry in the region,โ said Director Aparri as she called for support from the Ilonggos.
Stakeholders were also awarded copies of the field guide including the Northern Iloilo State University, University of the Philippines Visayas, Ateneo de Iloilo, Province of Iloilo, Province of Capiz,and the IMBF team among others.
Meanwhile, Prof. Early Sol A. Gadong, co-founder of IMBF,ย shared how the literature community is honored to have partnered with the Bureau who merged science and art with the latest publication.
Hundreds of mall goers and attendees witnessed the launching and had the first look on of the publication which was also available in digital copy.
An exhibit, serving as a sneak peek into the field guide, was also mounted at SM City North Block from April 19 to 21, 2024.
