Synergy work for fisherfolk formalized with the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding by BFAR, UPV, NGO for Fisheries Reform (NFR) as consortium partner of USAID Fish Right Program held at the Little Theater, UPV Visayas, Iloilo City on May 11, 2021.

Working together, the partnership will scale up the scope of the interventions in terms of coverage area, technologies and manpower to serve the fisherfolk in the Fisheries Area Management (FMA) 11.

BFAR strongly supports the provision of extension services and technology transfer for the benefit of the fisherfolk. BFAR 6 Regional Director Remia A. Aparri expressed that this is a welcome partnership with UPV having the expertise and with Fish Right Program tapping the consortium member, NFR for grassroots engagement.

The partnership will support UP Visayas in providing livelihood opportunities for fisherfolk and equipping them with entrepreneurial and post-harvest fisheries technologies. By offering alternative sources of income, the partnership hopes to reduce instances of overharvesting and illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU); and provide better value for catch to fishing communities.

The MOU was signed by BFAR 6 Director Remia Aparri, UPV Chancellor Clement Camposano, NFR Board Chairperson Marlon Palomo with the presence of Fish Right Program Chief of Party Nygiel Armada, UPV-CFOS Dean Encarnacion Emilia Yap and FMA 11 Secretariat Maria Aimee Sobrevega.

The MOU will translate the agreements into actions for the benefit of the fisherfolk in FMA 11.
