It is the FLL home team's responsibility to notify the Umpire in Chief of any scheduling changes that may impact an FLL umpire. For example, if you cancel your game, immediately notify the UIC.
...when the ump doesn't show or if the league is unable to provide one
Always notify the Umpire in Chief whenever you discover that an upcoming game doesn't have an ump assignment or if you arrive at a game expecting an umpire and one doesn't show up. You should also notify the opposing coach if you are given advanced notice that an umpire isn't assigned to one of your games.
Games without umpires improperly handled do not count for All Star eligibility or the minimum number of games required by Little League. Regulation VII of the Little League rulebook states that the league should "provide for not less than twelve (12) games [Senior Division: No minimum regular season game required}...exclusive of playoff and tournament games". The Tournament Organization section of the Rulebook further specifies that at least 12 games must be played for the league to be eligible. Seniors is exempt. Jrs only requires Senior League players league age 12, 13, and 14 to play 8 games. For all players to be All Star eligible, they must play in 8 games (Seniors excluded).
Rule 9.03d provides contingency planning for games without umpires. The league may choose to have a coach or parent umpire the game, but a Game Coordinator must be appointed to oversee the game. The Game Coordinator can not be a manager or a coach and must be an adult. The Game Coordinator shall do the following:
attend the pregame meeting
remain at the game for it's entirety
oversee the conduct of all players, managers, coaches, and umpires
have the authority to disqualify any player, coach, manager, or substitute
have the sole ability to suspend the game because of inclement weather or unfit playing conditions and to decide when play shall resume
The Spring season is the only season that falls under the purview of Little League. All other seasons are run according to the discretion of the league. There are no minimum game requirements. Since there is no score and records aren't kept the impact of playing without an umpire is negligible.
Since Fall '25 we've covered over 95% of your games. We do our best. While we strive for full coverage, it's unlikely to happen in the current environment.
