FIGHT FLIGHT FREEZE FAWN FLOP >

"Fight, flight, freeze, fawn, flop" describes a spectrum of automatic stress and trauma responses where your body's Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) takes over to protect you. 

  • Fight: CONFRONTATION / is a confrontational response, either physically or verbally. 

  • Flight: ESCAPISM / involves trying to escape or distance yourself from a threat. 

  • Freeze:SHUTDOWN / is a state of being stuck, immobilized, or mentally checked out. 

  • Fawn: PLEASING / is an appeasement response, often involving people-pleasing to avoid conflict. 

  • Flop: SELFSABOTAGE / is a complete shutdown, where muscles go limp, like a collapse.

👉 In short: Flip thinking is about embracing problems, turning them on their head, and transforming them into opportunities for growth, creativity, and resilience. 

“What if this problem is actually the solution?”

“What new possibilities open up if I flip my perspective?”

Reverse thinking, also known as backward or inverse thinking, 

is a mental strategy that involves approaching a problem from the opposite direction of usual. 

Instead of asking how to achieve a goal, 

it asks how to avoid achieving it. 

Flip thinking aka reversal thinking  is a psychological technique for transforming problems into opportunities. 

It involves accepting reality as it is, 

it's a creative mindset shift where you deliberately turn a problem, limitation, or negative situation upside down and reframe it as an opportunity, resource, or starting point for new solutions. 

then creatively reframing challenges to uncover hidden possibilities. 

Rather than fighting against problems, 

flip thinking aims to make them allies. 

Steps in Flip Thinking

  1. Identify the problem or frustration
    Clearly describe what’s not working or what feels limiting.

  2. Flip the perspective
    Ask: What if I take this problem as a given, or even as something positive?
    Example: “Too many people talking in the office” → flipped: “We already have great communication energy here.”

  3. Search for possibilities
    Use the flipped perspective to explore unexpected options.
    Example: Instead of silencing people, create “talk corners” or structured brainstorming sessions.

  4. Apply it practically
    Test small changes or solutions based on the new perspective.

Psychological Mechanism

  • Reframing: You change the meaning you give to a situation, reducing stress and opening creativity.

  • Cognitive flexibility: It helps the brain escape rigid “problem = bad” thinking.

  • Positive reinterpretation: By finding hidden advantages in obstacles, you build resilience and optimism.

  • Breakthrough creativity: Flipping assumptions can generate surprising, innovative solutions.
