I decided to record consistent body fat measurements for myself and a friend using Halo, a Fitbit Bath Scale, and a highly rated Leather Calipers. In November and December, early morning measurements were made using a halo and lavatory scale. My wife pinched folds of my skin in four areas with calipers. I measured the body fat percentage of the test subject once with each device.
An Amazon producer estimated that my friend, a 6-foot-3 man who weighed 198 pounds, had 24 percent body fat, a Fitbit scale reading of 19 percent, and skin fold measurements added up to 20 percent.
For me - 5 feet 6 and about 140 pounds - Halo said in November I had 25 percent body fat, the Fitbit said 19 percent, and skin fold measurements are up to 20 percent. In December, Halo said I had 26 percent more body fat (unfortunately, I had more Thanksgiving leftovers than usual), the Fitbit scale said 20 percent, and skin fold measures up to 21 percent.
Dr Cheskin speculated that Halo might have an exaggerated bias in its algorithm because minimizing body fat for an obese would be more problematic.
Dr. Molek Groupaudar, Amazon Medical Officer, who worked on Halo, said people should expect device results to be different because the method was more accurate than body fat and caliper measurements.
He said Amazon developed the body measurement algorithm from a sampling of tens of thousands of pictures of people from a wide range of demographic characteristics. Amazon then ran internal tests to measure body fat using a Halo scanner, smart bathroom scale, and DEXA, a technology that uses x-rays to scan bone density, which studies have found is a reliable measure of body fat. I found that the Halo method was twice as accurate as my bathroom scales.
However, Dr. Cheskin is not convinced by the claims of Amazon's accuracy. He said the valid study would include a clinical trial that would measure the body fat of multiple people with each method - halo scale, DEXA, and bioelectrical impedance scales - and compare the results side by side.
Precisely or not, the most frustrating part of Amazon's body fat analysis is that it lacks an important context. Although the app asked about race, age and gender, it said my body fat percentage of 25 percent was too high and out of the "health" zone (around 12 to 18 percent). She also said health outcomes were linked to a longer lifespan and a lower risk of heart disease.
Dr. Cheskin provided a more accurate analysis. Body fat levels can have different health effects based on your age, race, gender, cholesterol levels, and your family history. Waist circumference is also important, as severe belly fat can be associated with health problems.
If there's one thing I've learned in all of my years helping people lose weight, it's that quite a lot of people view the weight loss process through the lens of perfection. As you know, they think that they should eat the perfect diet of ideal foods containing the ideal number of calories day in and day out, while at the same time they need to maintain the ideal amount of exercise they burn more energy in than they store away as fat .
