Finding time to collaborate is difficult, but can significantly impart the co-teaching experience.
Co-planning has been described as one of the biggest obstacles for co-teachers. Despite the fact that the planning process is necessary for effective collaboration, co-teachers often do not have scheduled times to meet and work together. While it is ideal for co-teachers to plan together at the same time, this process is often not feasible.
When you are co-planning, you want to address the following:
Lesson objectives
Activities
Assessments (formative, summative)
Co-teaching model(s) used
Academic, social, behavioral supports
Grouping strategies
A solution for the planning problem is the use of a collaborative document between co-teachers.
Using a collaborative document, co-teachers can still benefit from planning together, but they don't need to be working in the same room at the same time. The platform is up to your preferences, but Google Docs and Sheets are strong choices. In implementing this strategy, consider the following:
Linking resources using smart chips
Highlighting parts of the lesson led by each co-teacher
Notifying co-teacher from within the planning document
Using voice-based communication to personalize planning

Linking resources makes it easier for special education co-teachers to make adjustments to assignments for some learners! Just make sure all linked resources are viewable by your co-teacher.
These tools could help you and your co-teacher effectively plan. Take a look at the resources below.

You can use any of these templates over the entire year. Just copy and paste the blank template & put it on the top of the Doc for easy access. Then, you can "star" or pin that Doc. It's a great way to reflect on past instruction and prevent having to constantly share and re-share planning sheets!
