The secondary aspect of the video game I plan to create is cosmic horror. Wikipedia defines this genre as “a subgenre of horror fiction and weird fiction that emphasizes the horror of the unknowable and incomprehensible more than gore or other elements of shock.” The genre is also called Lovecraftian horror, or eldritch horror. There are many pieces of media which utilise this, and I find each of them very intriguing and cool — the more basic forms of this are your typical gorey horror pieces, with aspects of the incomprehensible thrown in to make it more interesting, however I am more intrigued by the forms of media that utilise cosmic horror to its fullest intensity.
Just like in my worldbuilding section, I would like to lay out a few questions I will be answering with each subpage, to help my discussions stay relevant:
How does this piece of media capture the audience's fear of the unknown/incomprehensible?
How are these aspects embedded into the game's aesthetics/story in a subtle or obvious fashion?
Are there any other kinds of fear that this piece of media uses to enhance the use of cosmic horror?
