Career Pathways into Digital Nursing: Entry Points & Building Your Portfolio
"Would you mind sharing job opportunities for digital nurses / informatics, and how it can be accessed / achieved / additional studies requirements?"
"If I decided to change my path to the UK, where should I start?" (From a nurse pursuing informatics in KSA)
Moving into digital health rarely follows a single, linear path. Most nurses transition by becoming the "clinical bridge"—translating bedside needs into technical solutions.
The "Super-User" Route
Get involved in your current unit's Electronic Patient Record (EPR) implementations, software upgrades, or digital transformation audits.
Quality Improvement (QI)
Lead a small project fixing a broken digital workflow, improving documentation compliance, or reducing alert fatigue on your ward.
Build a Digital Portfolio
Document your digital contributions. Highlight:
A specific workflow or system bottleneck you helped solve.
A digital training session you delivered to peers.
A reflection on how a digital system impacted patient safety.
Job Titles to Search For
Do not just search for "Nursing Informatics." The UK and international markets use a variety of titles. Use these keywords on platforms like NHS Jobs, Trac.jobs, or LinkedIn:
Entry & Training
Clinical Systems Trainer, Clinical Applications Specialist, Digital Transformation Nurse, EPR Support Nurse
Mid-Level & Strategy
Clinical Informatics Nurse, Data Quality Nurse, Digital Matron, Implementation Lead, Digital Clinical Safety Officer
Executive Leadership
Chief Nursing Information Officer (CNIO), Deputy CNIO, Informatics Clinical Lead
International Transitions (e.g., KSA to the UK)
If you are an informatics nurse in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) or elsewhere looking to relocate to the UK:
Step 1: Complete your standard NMC registration requirements (IELTS/OET, CBT, and OSCE). Clinical compliance is always the first gateway.
Step 2: Highlight your digital experience prominently on your CV. UK Trusts are undergoing massive frontline digitisation (e.g., NHS England's Frontline Digitisation programme) and highly value nurses who already understand electronic workflows.
Step 3: Target UK Trusts that are currently deploying major EPR systems (like Epic, Cerner/Oracle, or System C) as they frequently recruit tech-literate nurses.
Courses, Scholarships, and Resources
"Do we have courses of digital nursing here in the UK?"
"Would you mind sharing the Florence Nightingale Foundation digital nursing scholarship link?"

Does My Role Count as Nursing Informatics?
"If I’m not mistaken, there is no health informatics option in NMC revalidation, too."
"Is the healthcare virtual assistant role considered part of nursing informatics and digital nursing?"
"I worked as a healthcare virtual assistant serving US clients… Does that role count in nursing informatics?"
The NMC Revalidation Question
Fact: While "Health Informatics" is not a standalone specialty dropdown box on your Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) portal, yes, it absolutely counts toward your revalidation.
CPD Hours: Any time spent training on new electronic systems, attending digital health webinars (like this FINC session!), or completing cyber-security modules counts as CPD.
Written Reflections: You can write your 5 reflective accounts on how digital data systems have altered your practice, how electronic tracking improved patient safety, or how you navigated digital clinical governance.
The Key: Always align your digital work back to the NMC Code—specifically regarding clear documentation, patient confidentiality (GDPR), communication, and patient safety.
Digital Nursing Role
Many Filipino nurses work as remote monitoring nurses for clients. Does this count?
Yes, with translation. If your role involves managing clinical workflows, navigating Electronic Health Records (EHR) like Epic or Oracle, auditing data entry quality, triaging virtual patient messages, or monitoring patients at home, this sits close to digital nursing and informatics.
How to frame it: When applying for corporate or UK NHS informatics roles, do not list your duties as generic administration. Translate your experience into clinical informatics competencies:
Instead of: "Answered doctor emails and typed patient notes."
Use: "Managed remote clinical workflows, ensured high quality data entry within EHR systems, and maintained rigorous data privacy/governance compliance across digital healthcare platforms."
Specialty-Specific Digital Nursing
"Is there digital nursing for neonatal care? And what does it look like?"
"Which trust are you from?" (Asked in response to a comment that a neonatal unit was almost fully digital)
"How can a nurse best position in a changing clinical environment? My organisation is just starting to integrate virtual care + HITH."
Neonatal Care (NICU) & Pediatrics
In a fully digitised neonatal unit, digital nursing looks like:
High-Frequency Data Integration: Cot-side monitors automatically feeding physiological data (oxygen saturations, heart rates) directly into the electronic chart, reducing transcription errors.
Closed-Loop Medication Administration: Using barcode scanning at the incubator to verify micro-dosages of high-alert medications for neonates.
Family-Centred Digital Portals: Secure platforms (like vCreate) allowing neonatal nurses to send secure video and photo updates to anxious parents who cannot be at the bedside.
Virtual Care & Hospital-at-Home (Remote Monitoring)
To position yourself well in an organisation launching virtual wards, ask yourself these core clinical safety questions to establish your leadership:
What data is the patient capturing at home, and how does it integrate into our hospital system?
What is the exact escalation pathway if a patient’s remote monitoring alerts show clinical deterioration?
How do we address digital exclusion for elderly or economically disadvantaged patients who lack Wi-Fi or tech literacy?
Leadership, Equity, and Representation
"What are the challenges prior to having leadership roles and what advice can you give for aspiring leaders?"
"How do you deal with inequality, racism and intolerance in digital health for those who want to start in the digital space?"
"In many government hospitals in the Philippines, healthcare technology and digital transformation are still challenged by limited budgets, fragmented hospital information systems, and low awareness of informatics… How can we bridge this gap and help healthcare management realise informatics is not just IT, but a critical investment?"
Overcoming Leadership Barriers
Aspiring leaders frequently face systemic hurdles before securing a seat at the table. To overcome these:
Find a Sponsor, Not Just a Mentor: A mentor gives you advice; a sponsor uses their social capital to mention your name in closed rooms where career-defining decisions are made.
Become the Subject Matter Expert (SME): Master a niche piece of technology or digital policy that your managers don’t have time to study (e.g., the local implementation of a specific EHR module).
Addressing Racism and Inequality in Tech
Digital health spaces can unfortunately replicate the same structural inequities, biases, and microaggressions found in wider healthcare settings.
Document Everything: Keep a clear, objective log of your technical contributions, project deliveries, and any instances of exclusion or unfair treatment.
Algorithmic and Clinical Bias Awareness: Use your unique perspective as a diverse nurse to champion digital equity. Point out when digital tools or translation systems fail culturally diverse patient groups.
Lean on Community: Organisations like FINC provide a safe container to share lived experiences, validate your feelings, and build a collective voice. While FINC cannot replace your employer's legal accountability, it ensures you do not navigate the space alone.
Bridging the Infrastructure Gap in the Philippines
For nurses working in resource-constrained public or government hospitals in the Philippines, advocating for informatics can be a steep uphill battle against low budgets.
Change the Narrative:
Stop talking to hospital management about "IT" (which sounds like an expensive expense).
Talk about clinical efficiency, cost-reduction, and risk mitigation.
Run small data-quality mini-audits to show management how much money or time is lost due to fragmented, unreadable paper records.
Low-Cost / Zero-Budget Initiatives:
Form an Informatics Champion Working Group to standardise paper documentation templates so they are "digital-ready."
Build basic digital literacy workshops using free tools (like Google Workspace or Excel) to track ward-level metrics before advocating for high-end EHR software.
FINC: What’s Next?
"Is this talk more about enabling Filipino nurses for the UK or the PH?"
FINC’s launch was intentionally grounded in the UK Filipino nursing community so the first public event could be clear, focused, and manageable. However, FINC’s wider identity is UK-Philippines and globally connected. The aim is not to import one country’s model into another, but to create a bridge for shared learning, leadership visibility, capability-building, and practical dialogue across contexts.
FINC is committed to evolving this community from an inspirational network into a powerful professional hub. Stay tuned, stay connected, and let's shape the future of digital nursing together!
