Fez Medina
A World UNESCO Heritage Site
Fez, one of Morocco’s most enchanting cities, is a treasure trove of cultural heritage. Steeped in history and boasting a rich tapestry of architectural wonders, Fez has been recognized by UNESCO for its exceptional universal value as early as 1981
Fez is one of the most ancient and fascinating cities in North Africa. Founded in 789 AD by Idris II, the city quickly became a thriving center of trade, learning, and religion. Later, under Idris II, Fez grew into a political capital and attracted scholars, artisans, and merchants from across the Islamic worldBy the 9th century, Fez was already home to Al-Qarawiyyin University, recognized as the oldest existing university in the world. Throughout the Middle Ages, Fez flourished as a hub of Islamic scholarship, science, and philosophy, rivaling great cities like Cairo, Baghdad, and Cordoba.
The city reached its golden age during the Mirinds dynasty (13th–15th centuries), when magnificent madrasas, mosques, palaces, and caravanserais were built. The Medina of Fez, with its narrow streets, bustling souks, and vibrant artisan quarters, has remained largely unchanged since that time.Today, Fez is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, admired for its well-preserved medieval architecture and living traditions. With more than 9200 alleys and no cars allowed inside the Medina, visiting Fez feels like stepping back in time — a city where history, culture, and spirituality come alive at every corner.
